China traditional gongs and drums have various names and complex structures, but there are several basic rhythm types, which are the main body or backbone of all kinds of gongs and drums. As far as Beijing opera gongs and drums are concerned, there are basically the following types: ① The rhythm of boxing style is characterized by the sound of gongs and cymbals appearing alternately in the positions of strong and weak beats. If the gong sound is represented by K and the cymbal sound by C, it is an arbitrary repetitive rhythm sound pattern ‖:kc:‖. This rhythm type is widely used in Beijing opera gongs and drums, and it is the structural basis of many other gongs and drums thoughts. ② The rhythm pattern of long hammer is characterized by the sound of big gongs and small gongs, which appear on the strong beat and the second strong beat respectively, and the sound of cymbals appears on the two weak beats. If the gong sound is represented by t, the rhythm pattern is arbitrary repetition ‖:kcte:‖. This rhythm can also be changed flexibly, which can be in the form of four beats, two beats or even loose board. The characteristic of this rhythm type is the effect of six beats. The gong and cymbals appear in the strong beat and the sub-strong beat respectively, and the gong appears in the weak beat twice, forming a random repetition of the rhythm sound type ‖: ktct ‖. However, because traditional operas rarely use six beats or three beats, this rhythmic sound mode is still treated as two beats in actual performance. (4) This rhythm type is characterized by syncopation rhythm in the voice part of the coolie, and the random repetition of this rhythm type ‖: ktctt ‖ has a very special sound effect. The above rhythm types are commonly used in Beijing opera gongs and drums.
