Northwest China is divided by geographical geography, administrative divisions and meteorological terms. Geographically, the northwest region is located in the north of Kunlun Mountain-Altun Mountain-Qilian Mountain and the Great Wall, and in the west of Daxinganling and Wushaoling Mountain, including the western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the northwest of Gansu Province, accounting for about 24.3% of the total land area of the country.
The northwest region in administrative division is usually called "five provinces in the northwest" or "three provinces and two districts in the northwest", including Shaanxi Province, Gansu Province, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Qinghai Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, with a total area of 3.04 million square kilometers, accounting for about 32% of the national land area. The northwest in meteorological sense includes Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Xinjiang and western Inner Mongolia.
Climatic characteristics of northwest China;
Northwest China is deep inland, far away from the sea. The high terrain of plateau and mountain blocks the humid airflow, which leads to scarce precipitation and arid climate in this area, forming a vast desert and Gobi desert landscape.
In the western region, only a few areas in the southeast have temperate monsoon climate, while most other areas have temperate continental climate and extremely cold climate. Winter is cold and dry, summer is hot, and precipitation is scarce, showing a decreasing trend from east to west. Due to the dry climate, the daily temperature difference is very large.
Northwest China has a continental climate of middle and warm temperate zone, and some areas have extremely cold climate. Turpan Basin is the hottest area in China in summer. Toksun is the area with the least precipitation in China.
