How to prune young plum trees?
Young trees refer to the period from colonization to a large number of fruits, usually 3 ~ 5 years. The pruning task in this period is mainly to enlarge the crown as soon as possible, cultivate a reasonable tree skeleton, and form a large number of fruiting branches as soon as possible to prepare for the early harvest in the full fruit period.

The growth of young plum trees is large, so it is better to combine winter and summer pruning. Give priority to light cutting, slow release and angle opening, leave more large auxiliary branches, fill the space as soon as possible, relieve the tree potential and improve the early yield. The opening angle of the main branch should be adjusted to 65 ~ 80 by means of bracing and pulling, and combined with light cutting of external buds to make it grow and bend. Auxiliary branches mainly use the flat and oblique average branches on both sides of the main branch, or use the upper oblique branches on both sides of some main branches by hanging branches.

Young plum trees have many branches and strong uprightness, and new branches also have the ability to make secondary branches. Attention should be paid to the combination of pruning in summer, and excessive upright and strong branches and competitive branches should be removed in time. When cutting in summer, the main branch should be used to extend the secondary auxiliary shoots at a suitable direction and angle to achieve the purpose of opening the angle and accelerating the shaping.
