How should cycads be trimmed?
Cycas belongs to Cycadaceae, which is native to southern China and distributed in Fujian, Taiwan Province and Guangdong provinces.

Japan, India and the Philippines are also distributed.

The tree shape of Cycas is beautiful, and the top of the crown gives birth to thick green pinnate compound leaves, forming a beautiful leaf crown. It is a landscape tree for landscaping in southern China. It can be planted in the center of flower beds, and is also suitable for potted plants, halls and meeting places.

Cycas is an evergreen palm-shaped woody plant with a stem as high as 5 meters.

Large pinnate compound leaves cluster at the top of the stem, and the compound leaves are composed of many slender leaflets. The edge of the linear leaflet is folded back, leathery, dark green and shiny.

Flowers have no perianth and are dioecious. The male cone has a cylindrical stem end, while the female cone is oblate and terminal, with brown hair, and blooms in August.

The fruit is vermilion and the seed is drupe-shaped.

Cycas spinosa also belongs to the same genus, with large leaves and wide feathers; Cycas yunnanensis has narrow feathers.

Cycas likes light, warm and humid climate, is not cold-resistant, and is vulnerable when the temperature is below 0℃.

The growth rate is slow and the life span can reach more than 200 years.

Cycas usually adopt a single-stem tree shape.

In May each year, new leaves grow at the top of the stem, and the old leaves of 3-4 years gradually age and wither.

After the new leaves grow from May to June, the whole leaves, such as dead leaves, old leaves, diseased leaves and incomplete, special and irregular leaves, can be cut off from the top of the stem to facilitate the growth of new leaves and form a perfect and neat crown shape.

If the plant is small, the leaves are irregular and the spreading angle is not ideal, all the original leaves at the top can be cut off to make new leaves grow and the plant shape more perfect.

Cut off the extra roots and buds in time.

Because the petiole of cycad is long, it should be cut off from the base of petiole when pruning, and it is not advisable to leave residual petiole.

Cycas can also cultivate multi-head modeling.

In spring, when the weather is clear and the cultivated soil is slightly dry, all the leaves of Cycas are cut off, and then the main bud in the middle of the top of Cycas is cut off with a sharp knife, or the whole end is cut off. Cycas broke the advantage of the top by cutting buds or removing the top, and promoted the hidden buds lurking on the stem to germinate, and soon some tillers would appear on the stem. After selection and cultivation, it can become a unique plant.

It is worth noting that when removing the terminal bud or cutting off the top part, after the wound is dry, it is advisable to apply sulfur powder or sulfur mixture to the wound to prevent the wound from being infected with bacteria and causing the stem of Cycas to rot.

In addition, try not to let rain or artificial watering pour into the wound. It is best to seal the wound with wax or wrap it with a clean film to prevent the stem from rotting due to water accumulation in the wound.
