Monk Chengzhen

Monk Jianzhen:

Jianzhen (688-June 25, 763), a monk in the Tang Dynasty, with a common surname of Chunyu, was born in Jiangyang, Guangling (now Yangzhou, Jiangsu). He is a descendant of the Nanshan Vinaya sect of the Vinaya sect, the founder of the Nanshan vinaya sect of Japanese Buddhism, and a famous medical scientist. He once served as the abbot of Daming Temple in Yangzhou. At the request of Japanese monks studying abroad, he traveled eastward six times to spread Buddhism and promote the spread and exchange of culture. On June 25, 763 (the first year of Guangde), Jianzhen passed away in Tangzhaoti Temple at the age of 76. The Japanese people call Jianzhen "the balance of the balance", which means that his achievements can represent the roof of the culture of the balance era (a metaphor for the peak, the highest achievement).

He also made many achievements in Buddhist architecture and sculpture. According to the "Biography of Tang Dahe's Shangdong Expedition", after Jianzhen returned to Huainan, he taught precepts and "during his lectures, he built temples and... made countless statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas." In terms of medicine, Boda was very capable and had excellent taste. He once presided over the Beitian Hospital of Dayun Temple, treated people's diseases, and personally prepared medicines for the patients. His medical skills were very high.
