What is the difference between a transverse incision and a vertical incision for caesarean section? What harm does it do to the mother?

When pregnant women are facing childbirth, they must choose the mode of delivery according to their own circumstances. One of them is natural delivery, which is what we often call normal delivery. The other is to go through the situation when there is no way to give birth naturally. The chosen method of delivery ~ caesarean section.

Many people may not know that although an incision is made on the abdomen during a caesarean section, the incision is divided into horizontal incisions and vertical incisions.

So what is the difference between a transverse incision and a vertical incision for caesarean section?

Difference 1

In usual scheduled caesarean sections, transverse incisions are generally chosen. Vertical incisions are generally used in more emergency situations.

When I gave birth to my second child, I had a cesarean section. Because of low amniotic fluid, I was forced to have a caesarean section after induction of labor failed. However, it was not a very urgent situation at the time, so a transverse incision was used.

A few days ago I accidentally saw a friend’s caesarean section wound, which was a vertical incision. Because my friend encountered a very urgent situation at that time - the fetus was severely hypoxic and needed to be taken out as soon as possible, so a vertical incision was used.

But now transverse incisions are generally used for caesarean sections.

Difference 2

If it is a transverse incision, the doctor’s field of view for observing the uterus will be worse. If it is a vertical incision, it will be easier for the doctor to see clearly what is going on inside the uterus, and the surgery will be less difficult than a horizontal incision.

So this is why a vertical incision is needed in very urgent cases, because only in this way can the baby be taken out as quickly as possible to avoid accidents.

Difference 3

The wound of the transverse incision is relatively low, and it is not easy to be pulled, and it is not so easy to feel pain, and because the lines of the transverse incision are along the skin , so a transverse incision will be more conducive to recovery. Because the wound of the vertical incision is relatively high up, it is easily involved and painful. Moreover, the edge pattern of the vertical incision is not consistent, so it is not as easy to recover as the horizontal incision.

Difference 4

The wound of the transverse incision is closer to the uterus, and it is more likely to cause adhesion when the uterus and the wound recover. The wound of the vertical incision is not so close to the uterus, so the chance of wound adhesion is reduced.

However, mothers do not need to worry too much. Although there is a possibility of postpartum adhesions, it is not high. As long as you turn over frequently after delivery, you do not need to worry about this problem.

Difference 5

Transverse incisions are prone to damage the superficial veins under the abdominal wall, so the amount of bleeding is relatively large. Relatively speaking, vertical incisions have the advantage and the amount of bleeding will be less.

Difference 6

Women with transverse incisions can use cosmetic threads because the tension at the incision is small. Women with vertical incisions have greater tension at the incision, so they cannot use beauty threads.

And due to the different location of the wound, the transverse incision wound is in the lower abdomen, so it does not affect the beauty-loving mother from wearing navel-baring clothes after recovery. The wound of the vertical incision is relatively high, so you can only dress more conservatively.

Although they are both caesarean sections, there are actually quite a few differences. But you don’t need to worry about this problem. Under normal circumstances, when we go to the hospital, we make transverse incisions. Women who need a caesarean section should think carefully about what they should do after delivery so that the wound can heal as quickly as possible and return to a line instead of turning into a centipede.

It’s just that pregnant women need to be clear about whether it is a horizontal incision or a vertical incision. In the end, the doctor has the final say.
