Rogue doctor is a Hong Kong film that completely localizes the Japanese manga background. The film is not so much adapted from a comic book as its original intention stems from the theme of the original comic book. It has nothing to do with the original characters or the Japanese "Shinjuku kabukicho area". According to Li Chi Ngai, the director, he just put the formula of two masters in the martial arts novel into this film. Tony Leung Chiu Wai, the hero, interprets the role of "rogue doctor" more vividly than the original comic book. In the film, he smokes, plays the guitar, wears sunglasses and plays the piano. The protagonist's dissoluteness is vividly interpreted by him, and at the same time, the audience can see the open-mindedness of knowing the world from his eyes. (Huaxue Review)
The story directed by Li Chi Ngai unfolds slowly and unhurriedly. Dr. Tony Leung Chiu Wai's calmness seeks inner peace at the bottom of the most basic society; Liang Yongqi's cross-class curiosity, Xu Zhian's simplicity and hesitation, and Professor Richard Ng's unconventional research all show that human beings are affectionate and simply show their personality. Pastor Luo Jiaying and cancer patients in Jordan chan held a religious ceremony similar to a concert, but they followed the trend. In the film, rogue doctor has not only a childlike innocence, but also a deep affection. (Sina Entertainment Review)
