1. Bury the soil for the winter
Overwintering with soil is a routine cold-proof measure for fig production in southern Xinjiang, and it can also be used for wintering protection in the area north of the Yellow River. Generally, the soil should be covered before the daily average temperature drops to 0℃, and the thickness should be more than 30cm. After the soil is thawed in the next spring, it should be moved and shaped, and special attention should be paid to pruning during the growing season.
2. Irrigation with overwintering water
When figs grow in autumn, soil moisture should be controlled in time to prevent new shoots from growing white and improve the lignification of branches. However, before the cold wave comes in winter, overwintering water should be watered in time. Especially in the Huaihe River Basin, frozen water is very important. On the one hand, it can prevent the soil from cooling too fast, on the other hand, it can also prevent the branches from being pulled out. The irrigation method can be full-garden flood irrigation or tree tray immersion irrigation.
Set up a wind barrier
Between the north side of the orchard and the garden blocks, several windbreaks perpendicular to the main harmful wind direction can be tied with corn or sorghum stalks, which can play an obvious protective role.
Colour the branches white or sokcho.
Brushing fig branches in early winter can reduce the range of temperature change, stabilize the moisture status in the branches, and thus reduce the freezing damage of the branches. Or wrapping fig trunk with gramineous straw harvested in autumn can also play a similar role.
