Shaper is used to plane small and medium-sized workpieces, and its working length is generally less than1m. The workpiece is clamped on an adjustable workbench or in a flat-nose pliers clamped on the workbench, and planing is carried out by using the linear reciprocating motion (cutting motion) of the planer and the intermittent motion (feeding motion) of the workbench.
2. Gantry planer
This is a planer for planing large workpieces. Some planers can process tens of meters or even tens of meters long workpieces, such as B2063 planer, with a workbench area of 6.3m×20m. For small and medium-sized workpieces, they can be clamped on the workbench for many times, or they can be planed by several planers at the same time.

The slotting machine, also called vertical planer, is mainly used to process the inner surface of the workpiece. Its structure is almost the same as that of the shaper. The main difference is that the slotting cutter of the slotting machine does linear reciprocating motion (cutting motion) in the vertical direction, and the workbench can do intermittent feeding motion in the vertical and horizontal directions.
Planer principle:
The ram is a planer with a planer for linear reciprocating motion. Because the tool rest at the front end of ram looks like a bull's head, it is also called a shaper. Planing machine is mainly used for planing plane, forming surface and groove on small and medium-sized workpieces in single piece and small batch production. The main motion of small and medium-sized shaper is mostly driven by crank-rocker mechanism (see crank-slider mechanism), so the motion speed of ram is uneven.
Large-scale molding machines mostly adopt hydraulic transmission, and the ram basically moves at a constant speed. The return speed of the ram is greater than the working stroke speed. The productivity of the shaper is very low, because it is processed by a single-edged planer and does not cut when the ram returns.
