Significance of Luochuan Loess National Geopark in Shaanxi Province
The park features loess profile and loess geological landscape, accompanied by vertebrate fossils, and preserves typical loess landscape relics. The stratigraphic section is continuous and complete, with clear exposure, which truly records important geological events and information such as paleoclimate, paleoenvironment and paleontology since Quaternary. It is the most typical geological body for studying Quaternary geological events in Chinese mainland and even Eurasia. Luochuan County is located in the Loess Plateau, with high terrain in the north and low terrain in the south. The platform is open and flat, and gently inclines to the southeast. The highest elevation of the platform around the Geopark is1136m, which is a typical area of loess landform development in China Loess Plateau.

The depth of the valley is between 80 ~140m; The valley slope is steep, with a slope of 30 ~ 60 degrees. Under the action of gravity, surface water and groundwater, loess landslides and collapses developed in the valley, and the valley source was strongly eroded. Among them, Heimugou is a V-shaped valley with steep slope, many landslides on both sides, and ditches are developed on the slope. The unique geological landform of the Loess Plateau has completely recorded the development and change history of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment from 2.5 million to 2.6 million years. It is a unique loess geological park in the world, which has important scientific research significance.

Reflect the change information since 2.5 million years.

Liu Dongsheng, an 87-year-old academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and winner of the highest national science and technology award in 2003, said at the opening ceremony that Luochuan Loess recorded the development and change history of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment from 2.5 million to 2.6 million years. Loess is a carrier, which not only reflects the biological evolution information and climate change characteristics since 2.5 million years, but also hides the thick loess culture.

Lei Xiangyi, a professor of geology at Northwest University, commented on Luochuan Loess National Geopark, saying that the loess accumulation is like a history book, and the loess accumulation in China records the rich information of climate and environment in northern China and even the earth for millions of years. Together with the records of deep-sea sediments and ice and snow accumulation in the Antarctic and Arctic, it has become the three best records for us to understand the changes of the earth's climate and environment in the past millions of years. The information reflected by Luochuan loess is more and more comprehensive than that of deep sea and ice and snow.
