In fact, the original research and development of Series 8 can be traced back to 1984. In a short period of five years, BMW spent a total of one billion German marks. Auto CAD software and wind tunnel test are used to participate in the design for the first time, which makes the drag coefficient of the 8 series only 0.29, far lower than the 635CSi, which is famous for its performance. The original 850i was equipped with a 5.0-liter 300-horsepower V 12-cylinder engine of BMW 750Li at that time. With a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic gearbox, the top speed could reach 250 km/h. For the first time, EDC, ASC T, DSC, vehicle information display, gearbox protection device, side airbag and many other luxury devices were used, making the 850i more expensive than BMW's top product 750Li.
1993, the new 850Ci replaced the 850i. Also released are the 840Ci with 740iL and the 850CSi with 380HP 5.6L V 12 engine. Among them, 850CSi adopts sports suspension and 17-inch wheels, which reduces the height of the car body. 1994, BMW increased the displacement of 850Ci from 5.0 liters to 5.4 liters, and the power increased by 22 horsepower. 1996, 840Ci was replaced by a brand-new 4.4L V8 engine. Although the displacement has increased, the output power remains unchanged. 1999, BMW had to announce that it would stop production of the 8 Series, because the sales volume was only 30,609 units after ten years of production.
