Suzhou, referred to as Gusu and Pingjiang for short, is a prefecture-level city and megacity under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province. It is an important city in Shanghai metropolitan area and Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou metropolitan area. It is one of the important central cities in the Yangtze River Delta, a national high-tech industrial base and a scenic tourist city approved by the State Council. It is located in the east of China, in the middle of the Yangtze River Delta, in the southeast of Jiangsu Province, bordering Shanghai in the east, Zhejiang in the south, Taihu Lake in the west and the Yangtze River in the north.
Suzhou is one of the first batch of 24 national historical and cultural cities, a famous water town in the south of the Yangtze River and a paradise on earth. Suzhou city was founded in 5 14 BC, with a history of more than 2500 years. In 589 AD, Emperor Wendi of Sui Dynasty changed the name of Gusu Mountain to Wujun as Suzhou. Since the construction of Greentown in Wu Zixu in the Spring and Autumn Period, Suzhou ancient city has basically maintained a double chessboard pattern with water and land parallel and river streets adjacent, with its unique characteristics of small bridges, flowing water, pink tiles and famous gardens.

Suzhou is a low-lying city, with plains accounting for 55% of the total area. Suzhou belongs to the Yangtze River Delta Plain and Taihu Plain, two first-class natural geographical areas, and four second-class natural areas along the Yangtze River, namely, Shazhou Plain, Suzhou-Xichang Plain, Taihu Lake and lakeside hilly area, and Yangcheng-Dianba Lowland. The terrain is characterized by gentle plains. The whole city is low and flat, and it slopes slowly from west to east. The plain is 3-4 meters above sea level, and the area around Yangcheng Lake and Wujiang River is only about 2 meters.
Low mountains and hills are scattered all over the country, with an altitude of100 ~ 350m, which are distributed in the western mountainous areas and Taihu islands, among which the dome hills are the highest, including Nanyang Mountain, Xidongting Mountain, Molifeng Mountain, Dongdongting Mountain, Qizishan, Tianpingshan Mountain, Lingyan Mountain, Yuyang Mountain, Yushan Mountain and tan shan.
