According to historians' research, during the Xuanhe period in Hui Zong in the Song Dynasty, there was indeed a Shanbo Uprising in A Liang led by Song Jiang, but unlike the general 108 written in Water Margin, there were not so many vivid and dramatic scenes.
Liangshan Lake, located in the west of Shandong Province, was originally a small lake, but it merged with many small lakes around it because of the overflow of cracks in the Yellow River from the Five Dynasties to the Northern Song Dynasty. By the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, a great lake with 800-mile waters was formed, with ports and reeds criss-crossing, ports and reeds criss-crossing, and many natural islands. The situation is both dangerous and complicated.
At that time, many bankrupt farmers, fishermen and some fugitives wanted by the government hid here, ganged up in groups and made a living by doing some "illegal" activities.
A number of forces are growing and their numbers are increasing. By the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, there had been many armed struggles and peasant uprisings against government corruption, exploitation and oppression.
Sung River Rebel Army is one of them.
The fuse of Sung River Uprising was the smoke of solving financial difficulties in Song Dynasty. It has set up a "western fentian" and declared that all the waters in the 800-mile water margin are "public". It is stipulated that anyone who goes fishing, picking lotus roots and cutting cattails in the lake must pay heavy taxes according to the size of the ship. Those who violate the rules and regulations are punished as thieves. Poor farmers and fishermen can't afford to pay heavy taxes, and their long-term dissatisfaction with social reality finally erupted like a volcano.
Under the leadership of Song Jiang and others, they took risks, armed with guns, and stopped the officers and men who came to suppress by virtue of the terrain where the water margin was easy to defend but difficult to attack.
In the first year of Xuanhe (A.D.119), this peasant team officially declared an uprising.
According to historical records, there are 36 main leaders of the Sung River Rebel Army.
They are Song Jiang, Chao Gai, Wu Yong, Lu Junyi, Guan Sheng, Shi Jin, Chai Jin, Ruan Xiaoer, Ruan Xiaowu, Ruan Xiaoqi, Liu Tang, Zhang Qing, which is near, Sun Li, Zhang Shun, Zhang Heng, Hu (Hu in the Water Margin), Li Jun, Huarong, Qin Ming, Li Kui, Lei Heng, Dai Zong and Li Kui.
Because there is no record in the history books, the total number of Sung River rebels is estimated to be nearly 10,000.
There are 108 heroes in Liangshan written in Water Margin, which is fictional by novelists. The author Luo Guanzhong and others "want to write a book, with thirty-six as the deity and seventy-two as the names" (Lang Ying: seven revisions), in order to make the novel more legendary, to cater to people's preferences, catchy and easy to spread.
But the novel is a novel after all, and readers should not regard it as real history.
Soon after the Sung River Rebel Army officially announced the uprising, it left the water margin and moved to Shandong, Qinghai, Henan and Hebei. According to historical records, this rebel army "runs rampant in Heshuo and Tokyo, with tens of thousands of officers and men, and no one dares to stop it."
"About two years later, in February of the third year of Xuanhe (11), Sung River Rebels attacked Haizhou (now Lianyungang) by boat from Shuyang, Jiangsu Province, and were surrounded by the ambush sent by Zhang Shuye, the magistrate of Haizhou, which suffered heavy losses and cut off their retreat.
In this desperate situation, Song Jiang had to lead the people to surrender, accept the favor of the imperial court, and become a part of the loyal ministers of the Song Dynasty.
Later, whether Song Jiangbu went to Jiangnan to fight for the peasant uprising army in Fang La has been debated by historians, and there is no conclusion yet.
But most historians believe that Song Jiang's troops are more likely to go to Fang La.
Song Dynasty was the dynasty with the largest number of peasant uprisings in the history of China.
Over the past 100 years, there have been hundreds of peasant uprisings in Song San, and the Sung River Uprising is only a minor one.
However, in the Southern Song Dynasty, the legacy of Xuanhe was published, which gave a romantic and story-telling account of the history of Sung River Uprising. In the early Ming Dynasty, the Water Margin appeared again, which described the story of Sung River Uprising more vividly and touching, thus making this peasant uprising, which was originally small in scale and had little influence, have a great influence, spread widely among the people, and even become a household name.
However, although the novel is related to history, it is not the same thing after all. This is what we should pay attention to when reading Water Margin.
