Customs after death (among villagers)

Take care of a dying elder in the family

"Where are you going" is the most painful thing in life. When the elderly lay dying, most of them were sentimental, affectionate, missing their children and caring for their loved ones. At this time, the children at home have to serve day and night, and they have to send messages to the children outside to urge them to come back quickly. After receiving such telegrams and letters, the children are eager to return. They run around day and night, longing for their hometown, crying and trying to meet their relatives. If they don't see each other for a while, not only will the elderly not be disappointed, but even their children will regret it for life and be accused of unfilial. Sometimes, coincidentally, the old man will be "dead set" as soon as the child enters the door. Therefore, the death of children guarding their parents is called "death". At this time, in front of everyone, the old man talked about some things behind him, such as who should be the "shopkeeper", the inheritance of career, the disposal of property, the exchange of accounts and debts, and teaching future generations to be a man. , also known as "Tuojia". Children should answer the old man's last words one by one, so that the old man can rest assured that he will not change his mind even after death. If the descendants and relatives of the deceased watched him die, the people thought it was a rare "good death". The old man is dying, and his children and grandchildren are still busy with their work, which is bound to be criticized by everyone and scolded by relatives and neighbors.

When people are seriously ill and hopeless, men should invite their uncles and relatives to visit them. It is a necessary etiquette for women to ask their parents for sick leave in the local area, so that they can know how people die when they are sick. Otherwise, they will suddenly be asked to supervise the funeral after death, and they will use this as an excuse to make things difficult. If you have other unpleasant things with your uncle's family, you are often invited. At this time, the only way is for the dutiful son to kneel outside the door and kowtow to reply, seeking sympathy and understanding. The funeral conditions proposed by my uncle's family and mine should be met as much as possible. Because the local custom is to quarrel with my uncle's house and mine, the funeral can't be handled smoothly.

Dressed

When the deceased dies, relatives will shave his head (male), comb his hair (female), wash his hands and have a facelift. You must wear shroud before you die (commonly known as "old clothes"). First, it is not easy to wear after death; Second, it is said that people wear clothes after death, that is to say, when they arrive in the underworld, they are naked and have no clothes. Shrouds are mostly prepared early. According to the local custom, the shroud should be sewn in the leap month of leap year, which means "merit and moist" for future generations. Shroud sleeves should be long enough to cover the tips of hands, and short sleeves should not be exposed. Otherwise, the descendants of the younger generation will reach for food naked. From the number of shroud pieces, it means wearing a single one to avoid double killing; Wear plain cloth on shroud cloth to avoid twill cloth, for fear that there will be an "evil" word, and the younger generation will engage in crooked ways; Especially avoid wearing leather clothes, because leather clothes are animal skins, and they are afraid of becoming animals in the afterlife; You can use silk instead of satin, because satin is homophonic and unlucky; Shroud can't use buttons, only cloth belts, because buttons are homophonic with "twist" for fear that future generations will be "rebellious". Shroud should see two ends of cotton, that is, winter and summer cotton-padded clothes and trousers, which means "taking cotton (sleeping) as security" The use of red lining in shroud means that the younger generation will live a rich life. If a child dies before his parents, a white cloth strip should be put on the shroud, indicating that he will subdue his parents in the underworld. Except for civil servants, the shroud of most elderly people still follows the style of robes and short robes in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, which shows the stubbornness of feudal habits.
