The Best Time to Guangxin Wucheng: The Best Time to Travel in Shaanxi

Starting from Datong, about 120 kilometers south along the highway, the mountains of Taihang Mountain are displayed in front of you. The feeling of Taihang Mountain is gentle and subtle. It has no abrupt peaks, but it gives me an insurmountable impression. The highway passes through Xinguang Wucheng, and the whole city site is located at the mountain pass sandwiched between two mountains.

Guangxin Wucheng is located in Shanyin County, Shaanxi Province. It was built in the seventh year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (AD 1374) and rebuilt in the third year of Wanli in Ming Dynasty (AD 1575). Wednesday is a miracle. Guangxin Wucheng's position has been a battleground for military strategists since ancient times. The Han Dynasty was under the jurisdiction of Yinguan County, Yanmen County. In the third year (BC 154), Yinguan County of Han Jingdi was located here, and Yanmen County of the Eastern Han Dynasty moved here, showing the importance of this geographical location! This place is close to the mountain and stands in front of Yanmenguan. In the Han Dynasty, the county was set up here, and the garrison guarded it, which effectively played a role in resisting the invasion of Xiongnu. In the Ming dynasty, in order to prevent the invasion and harassment of Mongols, the Ming dynasty began a large-scale project to build the Great Wall from the early stage, and this huge project was more complete in the middle and late Ming dynasty. There are many castles scattered inside and outside the Great Wall, and Xinguang Wucheng is one of them. This kind of castle on the edge of the Ming Dynasty was generally planted and only came out in wartime. In peacetime, it also has the economic functions of easy market and monopoly. However, its military role has always been the main one, as stated in the System of Two Towns and Three Customs: the attack of Shuozhou and Wudang Mayi Dachuan, and the important position of counties and counties in the Cenozoic era. Whenever the enemy enters from Datong, he is the first offender. It can be seen that the Fog City is the second line of defense to defend the Central Plains when the Great Wall of Datong is breached!

Stepping into the present ruins of Xinguang Wucheng, we can vaguely see the scale of the military castle of that year. The stone-based bricks on the south wall are still good, and there are brick arches. A stone tablet on the forehead of the door is illegible due to weathering. The bricks on the east and west walls have been removed, leaving only eight to ten meters of rammed earth walls, some of which have collapsed. On the hills on both sides of Xinguang Wucheng, there is only rammed earth on the Great Wall. According to local villagers, this section of the Great Wall used to be made of bricks, but now it has been demolished by local people to build houses and pigsty. Even so, this section of the Great Wall is still the essence of the existing Great Wall in Shanxi, and it is worth seeing!
