Bruce Lee - the rise and fall of international kung fu superstar

On November 27, 1940, which according to the traditional Chinese calendar is the Year of the Dragon, a baby boy with a quarter of German ancestry was born at the Chinese Hospital in San Francisco, USA.

The delivery nurse at the hospital wrote the baby boy's name on the birth documents: Bruce Lee.

The boy’s father gave him a Chinese name: Li Zhenfan. However, most Chinese people are more familiar with his other name: Bruce Lee.

One hundred days later, his parents took Bruce Lee back to Hong Kong.

No. 218 Nathan Road, Kowloon City, Hong Kong. More than seventy years ago, there was a mansion of more than 400 square meters here, which was Bruce Lee's home.

In 1941, the Japanese army occupied Hong Kong. For several years, Japanese bombers flew low and roared past the rooftops of buildings almost every day. People in the streets were so frightened that they fled in all directions and hid under the eaves. The air raid siren sounded, making everyone's face turn pale, and they were in constant panic.

But 5-year-old Bruce Lee is very different from other children. As soon as the Japanese plane arrives, he will quickly climb to the top of the building, raise his face and wave his little fists at the low-flying Japanese plane. Scream loudly without fear.

Bruce Lee's father, Li Haiquan, was the leader of a Cantonese opera troupe in Hong Kong, and his mother, Ho Aiyu, was the daughter of Hong Kong's wealthy businessman Ho Kam Tong.

Bruce Lee was the fourth child and the most worrying child in his family.

In addition to scolding planes, Bruce Lee also had a special hobby in childhood, which was fighting, and Bruce Lee's fighting was addictive.

Every day when I went home and changed my clothes, I went out to find someone to practice. Almost every day, there would be children who were beaten at Bruce Lee’s house, and their parents would come to complain.

Although Bruce Lee was naughty and naughty, he was quite talented in acting.

At the age of 10, Bruce Lee stepped onto the screen and participated in "Xi Lu Xiang", fully demonstrating his natural acting ability.

Bruce Lee also had a hobby when he was a boy - dancing, and he danced with precision.

When he was 18 years old, he participated in the Cha Cha Dance Competition in Hong Kong. At that time, his dance partner was not his girlfriend, but his 10-year-old brother. The two brothers' unique combination allowed them to win the championship in one fell swoop.

At that time, Bruce Lee already had fans. All the children in Kowloon City admired Bruce Lee. He could fight, dance, and act in movies. His girlfriend was even more famous. It was simply Can be called a super idol.

But how did this super idol become associated with martial arts? Time has to go back to when he was 13 years old.

One day in 1953, the street fighter Bruce Lee suddenly disappeared on the streets.

Because Bruce Lee was beaten, and the other person only hit him with one move, leaving him lying on the ground unable to move for a long time.

And the other party also said: I am just trying out the skills I have learned.

Bruce Lee, who was humiliated after this incident, was silent for a long time, often sitting alone in the room in a daze.

Father Li Haiquan thought his son was ill at first. Later, after asking his son's friends, he found out that his son had suffered a defeat.

Li Haiquan, who loved his son very much, thought for a long time and made a decision. He found a special teacher for his son - Ip Man.

As early as 1950, Ip Man came to Hong Kong from Foshan and opened his first martial arts gym.

He broke down the martial arts routines into simple and popular action names, and quickly spread them in Hong Kong in the most simple, clear and easy-to-understand way.

So much so that in just three years, his Wing Chun became established in Hong Kong, with more than 10 martial arts schools in Hong Kong.

Ip Man’s martial arts has influenced thousands of people of Chinese descent, so much so that it is still being shown on the big screen many times today.

Bruce Lee's father's inadvertent decision changed Bruce Lee's life trajectory drastically.

Bruce Lee, the former street bully, became a disciple of Ip Man, the first martial artist in Hong Kong, when he was 13 years old. He officially became Ip Man’s apprentice, and he began to be associated with martial arts.

In the process of practicing martial arts, Bruce Lee began to feel that he was vaguely touching something, and his previously frivolous and restless personality also greatly restrained.

Just when Bruce Lee had just understood some martial arts principles and was preparing to become a mature martial artist, his father Li Haiquan suddenly made another decision for him - to study in the United States.

Bruce Lee once again came to his birthplace, the United States, with $100 in his pocket. It seemed destined that this boy who was born not to like peace and quiet would surely expand his territory and become famous.

The fourth young master, who was still being served by a servant at home in Hong Kong two months ago, disappeared the moment he set foot on American soil.

Washing dishes is a job that almost every international student has to do, and Bruce Lee is no exception.

But he was smart and took advantage of his dancing skills to open his own Cha Cha dance training class three months after arriving in the United States.

At that time, Yan Jinghai, who was already the martial arts leader of the Chinese community in the western United States, wanted to come and take a look because he heard that Bruce Lee taught other martial arts skills besides dancing.

At that time, Yan Jinghai thought that this teenage boy would not be outstanding, but no one expected that Yan Jinghai would be a noble person who would help Bruce Lee enter the American film and television industry in the future.

At that time, Bruce Lee had no time to take care of Yan Jinghai, because he had more important things to do - go to college.

While studying in college in the United States, Bruce Lee carefully studied the Wing Chun boxing of his master Ip Man and used it as his mother boxing to create a new type of boxing. He named this Kung Fu "Zhen Zhen". "Fan Kungfu".

In April 1962, in an inconspicuous building in Chinatown, Seattle, USA, Bruce Lee’s Zhenfan Martial Arts Hall was established. This was the first martial arts hall in his life. Chinese Kung Fu and Kung Fu Movies The glory of the world kicked off in this martial arts hall.

It was at the Zhenfan Chinese Martial Arts Hall that Bruce Lee and Yan Jinghai met again. Yan Jinghai was upgraded from a dance student to a Chinese martial arts disciple.

But what Bruce Lee didn’t expect was that Yan Jinghai’s reappearance became a stepping stone for Bruce Lee to reach the top of American martial arts.

On August 2, 1964, at the Long Beach Karate Competition in the United States, a Chinese made his first appearance, stunning the audience.

He was wearing black clothes. He was Bruce Lee, who was only 24 years old at the time.

Closed eyes and sticky hands, push-ups with one hand and two fingers, shadowless boxing, inch punch and chain flying kicks, a series of action performances, shocking everyone, and brilliant.

Since then, Bruce Lee’s Zhenfan Martial Arts has opened the door to the American martial arts world, and this opportunity is entirely due to Bruce Lee’s disciple Yan Jinghai, who took out his own martial arts at the Zhenfan Martial Arts Center. The student certificate introduced Bruce Lee to Ai Bojia, the chairman of the American Karate Association, the organizer of this competition.

It was also because of this emergence that Bruce Lee's career reached its peak.

When Bruce Lee's career was in full swing, another important person appeared in his life, Linda Emery, a white Irish-American girl.

Shortly after Bruce Lee’s Zhenfan Guoshu Academy opened, Linda joined the Guoshu Academy on the introduction of a friend and became one of Bruce Lee’s early female disciples.

Linda gradually entered Bruce Lee's life. After falling in love for a year, the two entered the wedding hall in 1964.

Linda gave up her studies for the sake of her family. She always followed Bruce Lee. She did not expect Bruce Lee to become an international superstar in the future. She just wished that Bruce Lee could achieve his ideals and that Bruce Lee would be happy. Being successful is the greatest happiness in her life.

Bruce Lee, who had both good relationships and career success, began to appear frequently in various film and television dramas, and began to attract the attention of the world.

Compared with the traditional concept of bodybuilding, Bruce Lee's muscle lines were slender and more well-proportioned, and he soon became the most famous idol symbol in the fitness world.

The world's most famous bodybuilding and fitness magazine listed him as the most successful role model and publicly declared that Bruce Lee's contribution to human potential will affect mankind for at least 100 years.

Bruce Lee once said to his brother Li Zhongchen: "My mother said that I can live at least 100 years old." Li Zhongchen believed this deeply.

Bruce Lee has always followed the most rigorous training content. He has to run 10 kilometers within 15 to 45 minutes at noon every day. From Monday to Saturday, from 7 am to 9 am every day, it is two hours of abdominal muscle strength training. Muscle flexibility training is a one-hour weight-bearing strength training every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 11 to 12 noon.

Even such an overload training course still could not meet Bruce Lee's strict requirements for himself. In order to ensure that there was no trace of fat on his body, he even did some incredible things.

He will use a current stimulator to shock the body to exercise the buttocks and enhance movement.

At that time, his weight had been reduced to only 110cm catty.

Perhaps for ordinary people, a weight fluctuation of ten or twenty kilograms is nothing, but Bruce Lee is different. His body is more like a sophisticated machine. Once out of control, the consequences will be disastrous.

Excessive training methods not only caused Bruce Lee to lose weight suddenly, but also made his temper more violent and abnormal.

On July 6, 1973, Luo Wei, the director who had collaborated with Bruce Lee on "Enter the Dragon" and "Fist of Fury" called the police. Bruce Lee had a dispute with him and threatened Luo Wei with some kind of object. Wei, so Luo Wei dialed 999.

From the beginning of the year after the release of the film "The Way of the Dragon", Bruce Lee was sought after as a kung fu superstar and admired by everyone. In the middle of the year, he was accused of becoming a violent gangster and was investigated. There were only six short films in between. months time.

After experiencing such a situation of ice and fire, Bruce Lee collapsed.

Bruce Lee’s private life was subject to more and more interference. Every day, reporters from dozens of media outlets in Hong Kong gathered at the door of Bruce Lee’s home, Qihe Xiaozhu, asking for interviews. The reporters would stop everyone entering and leaving Bruce Lee’s house. People were conducting interviews, and the servants no longer dared to go out easily, and reporters even didn’t spare the garbage bags from Bruce Lee’s house.

For the safety of his family, Bruce Lee installed a closed-circuit television at the door of his home to identify visitors. His children were escorted when they came in and out, and his own study and bedroom were not even accessible to carefully selected servants. You can enter at will.

On July 21, 1973, an explosive news appeared on the front page of all Hong Kong newspapers: the popular kung fu superstar Bruce Lee died in the Elysium in Hong Kong at 23:30 on July 20, 1973. Lisabai died at the hospital after rescue efforts failed. She was only 32 years old.

This sudden bad news shocked the world.

Many people can’t believe this is true.

Some media even swore that this was not true.

The front page of Hong Kong's "Overseas Chinese Daily" published: Bruce Lee, the popular martial arts movie star, died mysteriously.

The front page of Hong Kong's "Jin Ye Bao" read: Bruce Lee is not dead. All this is just a means to hype the movie "Enter the Dragon."

All kinds of doubtful voices continued to emerge, and it was not until July 24, four days later, that people had to accept the reality that Bruce Lee would never come back.

Just when everyone was slowly accepting the fact that the kung fu superstar would eventually return to his ashes, the media suddenly broke the news that Bruce Lee was murdered.

The crime of murder cannot be easily determined, but the death of Bruce Lee is full of doubts...

After the news of the murder was exposed, the Hong Kong police immediately intervened in the investigation.

A woman named Ding Pei was listed as a key subject of investigation because she was the last person Bruce Lee saw before his death, and Bruce Lee died in her home.

Since July 24, 1973, reporters have been asking Ding Pei to confirm whether Bruce Lee had an accident at her home and was sent to Elizabeth Hospital.

Faced with constant questioning from reporters around the world, Ding Peixian strongly denied the theory that Bruce Lee died in a coma at her home. She also said that she was not at home at the time, but stayed with her mother.

But just when Ding Pei complained that he was innocent, the Hong Kong Government Information Service had confirmed that the place of Bruce Lee's accident was Ding Pei's apartment, and the same record was recorded on the hospital's delivery slip.

The police began to interrogate Ding Pei, and the media naturally began to spare no effort to report various speculations, but the public was more concerned about another person who lied in public, the boss of Jiahe Company, Zou Wenhuai.

The reason is that on July 21, Zou Wenhuai announced to the media in front of Bruce Lee's house that Bruce Lee had an accident at home.

What is Zou Wenhuai’s purpose in doing this?

Who was lying about Bruce Lee’s death? The public pointed the finger directly at Zou Wenhuai, the boss of Jiahe Company.

At this time, the anxious Zou Wenhuai also immediately revised his previous "lie". His testimony in court showed that he admitted that Bruce Lee died in Ding Pei's apartment and lied in front of the media in order to maintain Bruce Lee's dignity. , because Bruce Lee probably died on Ding Pei's bed.

Zou Wenhuai's change of account and Ding Pei's denial made people more and more believe that there was something fishy behind Bruce Lee's death.

Ding Pei studied in the Film and Drama Department of the National Academy of Fine Arts in Taiwan. When Bruce Lee returned to Hong Kong to develop his ambitions, she was also seeking development in the Hong Kong entertainment industry. She is mostly famous because of Bruce Lee.

They first met in the spring of 1972 at Shego's Restaurant in the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Also present at that time was Jiahe boss Zou Wenhuai. He came to discuss filming with Bruce Lee. In order to liven up the atmosphere at the dinner, he invited the pure and lively actress Ding Pei to accompany him.

After that, Bruce Lee and Ding Pei often interacted with each other, and for a while the two were almost inseparable.

At that time, Bruce Lee was filming at Golden Harvest Company, and Ding Pei often drove over to watch Bruce Lee filming. She made no secret of her love for Bruce Lee and would take the initiative to visit Bruce Lee's home.

She often saw Linda. Linda recalled that Ding Pei once told herself that she loved Xiaolong very much.

Ding Pei wanted to play a role in Bruce Lee's new film "The Death Game", and on July 20, he made an appointment with Bruce Lee and Zou Wenhuai to discuss the matter at his home.

Around 7 o'clock in the evening, Bruce Lee said he felt uncomfortable and had a slight headache. Ding Pei asked Bruce Lee to take a painkiller and asked Bruce Lee to go to her bedroom to rest.

At about 7:30, before Zou Wenhuai went out, he went to the bedroom to check on Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee was still awake at the time, but the two did not speak.

At 9:45 pm, Zou Wenhuai returned to Ding Pei’s home. Bruce Lee had not yet woken up. Zou Wenhuai tried to wake Bruce Lee up, only to find that Bruce Lee was sleeping on his side and could not wake up no matter how hard he pushed.

Ding Pei immediately called her personal doctor. In about ten minutes, the personal doctor rushed to Ding Pei's house, and then Bruce Lee was sent to Elizabeth Hospital for rescue.

But there was no way to save him. Bruce Lee closed his eyes forever and his body was autopsyed.

The public is eagerly waiting for the court to give the real cause of Bruce Lee's death. Is there any other reason for his sudden death apart from human factors?

On May 10, 1973, Bruce Lee was dubbing for the edited version of "Enter the Dragon". He suddenly fainted on the way to the bathroom and fell unconscious on the spot.

When he was taken to the hospital, the cause given by the hospital was fatigue. This collapse came just two months before his death.

But a small physical discomfort did not attract anyone's attention, and Bruce Lee also believed that there could be no problems with his strong body.

Before July 1973, no one believed that Bruce Lee would die, because in people's impression, his strength was as strong as his Kung Fu, and he was invincible in the world.

After 2 months of investigation and research, the forensic doctor explained that Bruce Lee died due to cerebral edema due to an allergy to a certain drug. In other words, "a small pill" killed Kung Fu. Superstar Bruce Lee.

Drug allergy is an ordinary, simple, and straightforward cause of death. The cause of death report seems to be the answer, but what is written in black and white does not seem to be the truth. Everyone will sincerely believe and accept the legend of a generation of heroes. Has such a simple method fallen?

Of course not.

However, fate did not end there. Twenty years after Bruce Lee's death, Bruce Lee's only son, Li Guohao, also embarked on this interpretation path.

When he was filming a scene in the movie "The Crow", his character was about to be shot. The props team accidentally loaded a real bullet into the gun's chamber the day before, and another shot was fired the next day. A prop crew thought it was an empty gun, and when the actor pulled the trigger, 28-year-old Li Guohao died on the spot.

The mysterious deaths of Bruce Lee and his son Li Guohao still make people sigh.

As for the legendary superstar Bruce Lee who made Chinese kung fu famous all over the world, we can only recall it through the remaining precious images...
