Winter pruning is also called dormant period pruning. It is suitable to do it after the leaves fall and before budding. In arid and cold areas, severe winter pruning is prone to frost damage, so it can be postponed until spring before budding. The following technical points should be grasped when pomegranate trees are pruned in winter:
Handling of large branches. According to the principle of three sparse and three dense, the three main branches and side branches should be kept 80-100 centimeters away from each other to facilitate the growth of small branches. If the distance between the main and side branches is small, the large branches can be thinned out or spread apart.
Treatment of twigs. After the distance between the main and side branches is widened, thinning and pruning methods are used to make the distribution of the branchlets on the crown appear sparse at the top and dense at the bottom, and sparse on the outside and dense on the inside. It is required that the branches do not cross each other, do not overlap each other, and leave space. The purpose of leaving a margin is to leave the space needed for new shoots to grow after germination, thereby avoiding the intersection and overlap of new shoots.
Treatment of fruiting mother branches. During the whole process of thinning and after thinning, you must first identify the flower buds and the fruiting mother branches with flower buds, keep as many fruiting mother branches with flower buds as possible, and keep 3-5 vegetative branches around them. If there are too many mother branches that bear fruit, you can thin out some smaller branches. If the original branches are too dense and no flower buds are formed or there are very few flower buds, just prune them until the small branches do not cross or overlap each other, and there is room. .
