How to graft camellia, detailed explanation of the grafting method of camellia (with photos)

The camellia plant is beautiful in shape, with dark green and shiny leaves, and bright and colorful flowers. It is one of my country's traditional precious ornamental flowers. But have you ever thought that the beautiful plant shape and variety of flower colors of camellias are actually the result of grafting? The grafting of camellia is not difficult. As long as you follow the following operating instructions, grafting will be much simpler~ How to graft camellia

1. Grafting time of camellia:

In order to improve grafting The survival rate must be during the period when the rootstock absorbs water and nutrients vigorously. Grafting can usually be done from May to September. According to experiments, June to July is the best time for grafting. At this time, the temperature is suitable, the camellia scion has become lignified, the transplanted rootstock seedlings have survived, and the grafting survival rate can be as high as 90?bf}.

2. Camellia grafting method:

1. Peeling and inlaying method: This method is suitable for use in summer and autumn when the rootstock can be peeled. It has a high survival rate and can quickly form the crown. The main methods of tree grafting. It is widely used for high-inoculation replacement of low-improving Camellia oleifera forest, or the establishment of Camellia resource forest by grafting Camellia oleifera forest with camellia varieties, and the grafting of Camellia oleifera trees or other Camellia trees to create Camellia stumps. In the area to be grafted, make 2 parallel and longitudinal cuts, reaching the xylem, about 3cm long. The width depends on the thickness of the scion, generally 0.3~0.5cm. Then make 1 crosswise cut to open the bark and make the incision appear "H" "shape. Take a section of the scion with one bud and one leaf, about 2.5cm long, cut the wood on the opposite side of the petiole into a long flat opening, use a blade to peel off the bark on both sides of the flat opening, embed the scion into the cut of the rootstock, and wrap it tightly, leaving only the petiole. and axillary buds. Then use a transparent film to encapsulate the entire grafted site, leaving 3~5cm space inside to form a moisturizing cover

2. Triangular inlay method: This method can be used in spring when the bark is not easy to peel off, and is suitable for large trees. Rootstock grafting has fast shoots, early canopy formation, and smooth grafting healing areas. It is very suitable for use when making camellia bonsai using Camellia oleifera tree stumps, but the technical requirements for operation are slightly higher. Cut off the stock at the grafting site, and use a sharp knife to cut a triangular groove on the cut side of the stock, about 2.5cm long, and the width depends on the thickness of the scion. Take a scion with one leaf and one bud, about 3cm long, and cut it into a corresponding convex triangle from the bottom of the petiole. Insert the scion into the rootstock groove so that both sides are tightly combined and the joint is tightly wrapped. Then cover the scion and grafting site with a plastic bag to form a moisturizing cover. After the scion buds sprout, gradually loosen them until the moisturizing cover is removed.

3. Young branch grafting method: refers to grafting semi-lignified scion branches onto new branches of non-semi-lignified rootstock, generally using the split grafting method. After grafting, cover the scion and grafting site with two layers of plastic bags, and put a kraft paper bag on the outside to block strong light. After survival, gradually remove paper bags and plastic bags. This grafting method is the main method for grafting camellia seedlings or cultivating multiple varieties of camellias in one tree.

4. Water cutting grafting method: The advantage of this method is that it is easy to manage and is suitable for family cultivation of camellia. This method is also commonly used when grafting camellia on old camellia piles to make bonsai. The cutting and joining of rootstock and scion are basically the same as the triangle joining method. The difference is that water cutting grafting uses the entire branch as the scion, which is 8~15cm long. After the joint is bandaged, the lower end of the scion is exposed by 3~5cm. Use a small glass bottle containing water to fix it on the rootstock, and insert the lower end of the scion into the water bottle. After the scion has healed and sprouted, remove the water bottle and cut off the lower part of the scion.

3. Post-grafting management of camellia:

1. Cutting: 20 to 30 days after grafting, the healing situation should be observed in time. The healed plants can be cut on the scion with a small saw. Cut off 1/2~2/3 of the original trunk of the rootstock at 2~3cm and press it down. Generally, do not cut off the main stem immediately because the scion has not yet been able to absorb nutrients. Leave part of the main stem to continue absorbing water and nutrients to supply the growth of the scion. After 70 days, the scion axillary buds will begin to sprout and grow. At this time, all the main stems can be cut off.

2. Untie: When the axillary buds of the scion grow out, the sealing film can be untied. After about 20 days, cut off the tight straps to allow them to grow and develop normally.

3. Removal of buds: There are many budding branches on high-stock grafting rootstocks and they grow quickly. They must be removed in time, otherwise it will affect the growth of the scion, which may cause the plant to grow slowly, or cause the plant to wilt and dry up. . Remove buds until scion growth becomes dominant.

4. Shaping: After the grafting is successful, it should be shaped appropriately. According to the needs of the camellia tree shape and branch position, it should be tied with ropes and directional shaped.
