How to maintain hawthorn bonsai
1. Variety selection

Potted hawthorn trees generally choose varieties with late fruit maturity, large fruit shape, bright red color and strong cold resistance. Such as red pulp cotton, swallow pulp red, Fourier red, cold dew red, big Venus, Zezhou red, big cotton ball and so on.

2. flowerpots and nutrient soil

The flowerpot for potted hawthorn trees should be a well-ventilated earthenware pot with a diameter of 30-40 cm and a depth of 30 cm, or an equivalent wooden bucket or wooden box. The nutrient soil in the basin is humus or humus, garden soil and sand with a ratio of 4: 4: 2.

Step 3 raise seedlings

There is a great difference between potted seedlings and open-field seedlings. The seedlings used in pot culture of hawthorn first require well-developed fibrous roots from the root neck to the root system. The greater the amount of fibrous roots, the better the growth after pot culture. The hawthorn seedlings grafted with rootstock seedlings have the above characteristics and are very suitable for potted hawthorn. In the place where wild hawthorn is distributed or under hawthorn trees, take rooted seedlings, transplant them to nurseries for centralized management and unified grafting.

After grafting survived, the growth of root system became vigorous. In the growing season, the roots can be cut into the soil with a sharp knife or shovel, including cutting off the main root of the seedling anvil (generally 20~30 cm deep) and cutting the roots short to limit the extension of the root system and increase the number of fibrous roots. For the new shoots, pull the main branches (increase the angle), pick the new shoots in time in the early growth stage (May), control the seedling height and reduce the branching points of the main branches. According to the requirements of potted plant modeling, the years of nursery seedling can be extended, but it can be put into pots 1~3 years after grafting. After potted, perennial branches with flower buds can also be grafted, which has the obvious characteristics of high survival rate and good fruit setting.

Step 4: plastic trimming

Trees can take many forms, such as bent stem, straight stem, inclined stem, layered and so on. However, due to the obvious advantage of hawthorn top, it is easy to weaken the growth potential of lower branches and buds. The basic requirements of its tree shape are that the tree should be short, not high, the main branch angle should be large, not small, and the upright branches on its back should be short, not long, so that its branches can spread out to form a slightly flat crown. Pruning in winter is mainly thinning. Sparse weak branches, cross branches, overlapping branches, over-dense branches, erect branches. Retract the long and weak branches. When retracting, it should be noted that there must be branches in the right direction at the incision to facilitate the recovery of branch potential.

5. Enhance strength and flowers

Potted hawthorn trees can form flower buds at the top as long as the new shoots are strong and there are no autumn shoots. The thicker the fruiting branches, the stronger the ability of sustained fruiting. Therefore, under the condition of keeping the tree compact, cultivating enough strong branches is the basic measure to improve the potted level of hawthorn. The critical period is from germination to early flowering, when hawthorn needs water and fertilizer. At this time, fertilizer and water management is the key to make branches strong and flower buds form. Apply 0.2%~0.3% inorganic liquid nitrogen fertilizer and 1 time 200 times Pica amino acid water-soluble fertilizer at intervals of 2~3 times, with an interval of 7~ 10 day each time. After mid-July, control the use of inorganic nitrogen fertilizer to inhibit the occurrence of autumn shoots. In addition, in order to promote the formation of flower buds, measures such as girdling and root cutting can be taken.

6. Promote flowers and protect fruits

Spraying 30× 10-6~60× 10-6 gibberellin on hawthorn in full bloom can increase the fruit setting rate by 30%~40% and obviously increase the fruit. The girdling and girdling of hawthorn trunk at full flowering stage can also significantly improve the fruit setting rate. However, the object of girdling must be potted trees with vigorous growth, otherwise the effect will be poor and even a large number of flowers and fruits will be produced.

7. Cold and winter

Hawthorn has strong cold resistance, but the protective effect of pot wall on root system is limited under potted conditions, so measures should be taken to prevent freezing injury. For a large number of potted plants, you can dig ditches and bury pots on the spot. The depth of the ditch depends on the height of the flowerpot. Before burying, fill the pots and ditches with enough water, and then seal the soil when the water seeps dry. A small amount of potted hawthorn can be moved to the corridor or indoors for wintering, and attention should be paid to proper watering, once a month/kloc-0. Potted hawthorn can be taken out of the room in March of the following spring after the soil is thawed.
