How to shape ginseng and banyan tree bonsai

1. Tree Shape Making

When modeling the ginseng and ficus bonsai, the main effort should be spent on lifting the roots to make them look like hanging roots and exposed claws. Of course, branches, trunks, and leaves cannot be ignored because they are an indivisible whole of a tree. The shapes of branches and leaves often adopt a natural style with distinct layers. The branches of the banyan tree are soft and the binding time is longer than that of ordinary trees. It usually takes about two years to remove the bindings.

Because the branches of the banyan tree are softer than other trees and are easy to twist into shapes, it is generally difficult to see straight-stem banyan tree bonsais. The leaves of the banyan tree are large and the roots are strange. There is no way to use the banyan tree to make a jungle-style bonsai. Some bonsai enthusiasts often take advantage of the soft trunks, thick and long roots of the banyan tree and its strong adaptability to create bonsai styles such as curved trunk type, slanting trunk type, cliff type, tree stone type, and root lifting type.

The leaves of banyan trees are generally relatively large and not beautiful enough, so their growth should be controlled. In addition to spraying less water on the leaves, the leaf picking method can also be used to make the leaves smaller. In March in the south and in April in the north, cut off the tops of the branches, then cut off the leaves from the petioles, and strengthen fertilizer and water management. New leaves will generally grow in about 25 days; the second leaf picking will be carried out in July. In the north, you can pick leaves twice a year. In the south, due to the higher temperatures, you can pick leaves a third time in September. After picking leaves several times, the banyan tree becomes densely branched and has small leaves.

2. Planting and potting

The banyan tree has strong adaptability and can grow in acidic, neutral and slightly alkaline soil, but it is best to grow in slightly acidic, loose, well-drained soil with a certain degree of fertility. Planting in the middle. Planting is usually carried out in March to April before germination.

Purple sand pots are often used for banyan bonsai, and glazed pottery pots are also used. The depth and style of the pot depend on the shape. Cliff-type pots are mostly made of stick pots. If the bonsai is placed on a high stand, ordinary square pots or round pots can also be used; curved stem type, slanting stem type, root-lifting type, and tree-stone type. Use rectangular or oval pots of medium depth.

Conservation in shade shed. In late autumn and early winter, when the lowest temperature at night drops to 6-7℃, they should be moved indoors to a sunny place to survive the winter. In winter, the room temperature should not be lower than 5℃. Palm bamboo likes a warm, humid, ventilated environment with a certain amount of light. For example, exposure to the scorching sun and dryness in the pot often cause the branches and leaves to wither and turn yellow. In mild cases, the growth will be poor, and in severe cases, they may die.

(2) Watering. In addition to keeping the basin moist, sprinkle water on the ground frequently. When the weather is hot, watering should be done in the morning and evening, and spray water on the leaves. After moving indoors in winter, water less. Watering in winter should be done around noon when the temperature is the highest of the day.

(3) Fertilization. During the growing season, brown bamboo should be fertilized with decomposed thin liquid fertilizer mainly composed of nitrogen fertilizer 1-2 times a month, and "alum fertilizer water" should be applied several times at intervals. In this way, the branches and leaves can be lush and green.

(4) Plastic surgery. It is relatively simple to reshape the palm bamboo bonsai. First, you should cut off dead branches and diseased branches. If the branches and leaves are too dense, you should also cut off some leaves and 1-2 branches to maintain the beautiful shape of the bonsai with scattered heights and density.

(5) Prevent pests and diseases. If palm bamboo is placed in a hot and unventilated place, it is susceptible to scale insects and should be prevented and treated in time.
