Because the State Council issued a reply of "agreeing to cancel Yichang County, Hubei Province, establish Yiling District of Yichang City, and adjust some administrative divisions of Yichang City". Yiling District, belonging to Yichang City, Hubei Province, is located in the transition zone from the mountainous area in western Hubei to Jianghan Plain, on both sides of Xiling Gorge of the Yangtze River. With a total area of 3438.99 square kilometers, it governs 1 street, 9 towns, 2 townships and 2 township-level units. "The water is here, the mountain is here and the tomb is here", hence the name "Yiling". On March 22nd, 20001year, the State Council approved the revocation of Yichang County and the establishment of Yiling District of Yichang City. On July 28th, Yiling District was formally established.
