brief introduction

Shanghai, referred to as "Hu" for short, is one of the four municipalities directly under the Central Government of China. During the Warring States Period (475-22 BC1), Shanghai belonged to the State of Yue first, and then to the State of Chu. Kings of Chu appointed Huang Xie as Prime Minister, and made him Chunshen. Shanghai is his hometown. Shanghai's old name "Shen" came from this.

The name "Shanghai" actually appeared in the Song Dynasty (960- 1279), when Shanghai became a new trading port. The Huangpu River, the mother river, runs through Shanghai and flows into the Yangtze River. There are 18 streams, one of which is called "Shanghai Stream"-near the Bund, so the nearby towns are called Shanghai City. Later, the whole area was named "Shanghai". In the Ming Dynasty (1368- 1644), Shanghai became the largest textile center in China, and its commerce developed rapidly.

1840 After the Opium War, Shanghai was opened to foreign powers as a trading port, and they established their concessions there through the unequal treaties imposed on China. In the following century, Shanghai became the largest base for imperialist aggression against China, and was called "adventurer's paradise" by the west.

Shanghai is a city with a glorious revolutionary record in the modern history of China, where the Communist Party of China (CPC) was founded. On July 7th, 1927, Shanghai was declared as a special administrative region. 1On May 27th, 949, Shanghai was really liberated.
