Shanghai, referred to as "Hu" for short, is one of the four municipalities directly under the Central Government of China. During the Warring States Period (475-22 BC1), Shanghai belonged to the State of Yue first, and then to the State of Chu. Kings of Chu appointed Huang Xie as Prime Minister, and made him Chunshen. Shanghai is his hometown. Shanghai's old name "Shen" came from this.
The name "Shanghai" actually appeared in the Song Dynasty (960- 1279), when Shanghai became a new trading port.
