1. The predecessor of China Geo University was founded in 1952, which was Tsinghua University, Peking University and Tangshan Railway Institute (Tangshan Jiaotong University was renamed Tangshan Railway Institute after some departments were adjusted to Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, Beijing Geological Institute, Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel (now Beijing University of Science and Technology) and Beijing Institute of Mining (China University of Mining and Technology) in 1952). Li Siguang, a famous geologist in China, is the director of the preparatory committee of the school, and Liu Xing is the first dean of the school.

2. Shortly after the Cultural Revolution began, the central government decided to relocate thirteen key universities in Beijing due to the domestic and international situation. Beijing Institute of Geology moved out of Beijing on 1970 to open a new course in Hubei. In the process of moving south, the school suffered a lot and lost a lot. At one time, it was scattered in four areas. With the help of Hubei brother universities, it settled in Wuhan on 1975 and changed its name to Wuhan Institute of Geology. After the Cultural Revolution, in order to solve the problem that some well-known scholars in the school still stayed in Beijing because of their work needs, Deng Xiaoping approved the resumption of running schools in Beijing on 1978 and established Wuhan Institute of Geology, Beijing graduate department.
