Temple market in Phnom Penh
There are six ancient Buddhist temples and many later Buddhist temples in Phnom Penh. These solemn temples make Phnom Penh the Buddhist center of Cambodia. Unalong Temple, located on the Tonle Sap River about 200 meters north of the Royal Palace, is the largest and most famous temple in Phnom Penh. It is a Buddhist temple, presided over by the Mohan Sect of Cambodian Buddhism. The temple was built in 1443 and has a history of nearly 560 years. There is the largest stupa in Phnom Penh, surrounded by five smaller stupas. 1890, the abbot monk Wang Congxilan (present-day Sri Lanka) welcomed a handful of Sakyamuni's ashes and enshrined them in the pagoda. Later, many dignitaries also built urn towers in this temple to store ashes, and gradually formed urn tower clusters around the Great Buddha Pagoda. The abbots of Unalon Temple have made positive and indelible contributions to the preservation and development of Khmer national culture. In addition, Dong Bo Wadai Temple, Walangka (built in 1882), Daoist Temple and Daguan Temple are all famous temples in Phnom Penh. Shopping in Phnom Penh is mainly concentrated in several big markets, such as New Market, Ujah West Market and Russian Central Market. The central market is the commercial center of Phnom Penh, built at 1936. This is a cross-shaped dome building. Looking down from the air, it looks like a huge electric fan. The building has no beams and columns, extending in all directions, and the structure is very strange and novel. The new market sells gold, silver, jewelry and various daily necessities, which is the most prosperous place in Phnom Penh.
