Hoffman's own design style was deeply influenced by Macintosh, and he liked regular vertical composition, which gradually evolved into a grid form and formed his own distinctive style. A large number of metal products, furniture and jewelry designed by him for the Vienna Production Alliance all adopt square grid composition, which earned him the nickname of "Chessboard Hoffman".
