-comment on "taking pleasure in bouncing stones" and "taking stones as the spirit"
Introduction: Not long ago, Shi Yu and others published the author's essay "On the Determination of Stone Appreciation Elements and the Dominant Position of Form in Elements". This paper puts forward the viewpoints that "pattern belongs to form" and "form is the essence and soul of ornamental stone art" In order to further clarify the above point of view, the author boldly commented on Mr. Zhang Wei's theories of "appreciating the main single factor" and "stone has three qi" Please let me know what is offensive.
Name the king supreme
In the 95th issue of Shidao (May, 2003), there was an article on Appreciation of Subjective and Single Factors-Appreciation of Form, Quality, Color and Texture, which was published by its editor-in-chief, Mr. Zhang Wei. The article points out: "Any kind of stone has its different main ornamental factors, so we should not put forward too high requirements for the secondary ornamental factors." "For example, Taihu Stone, Kunshi Stone and Moshi Stone, the change of shape is their strength, so' appreciating the shape' naturally becomes their main ornamental factor." "Agate stone is of good quality, as are natural jade and yellow wax stone. Their main decorative factor lies in the texture. " "Malachite, painted pottery stone, large fossils and other stone species are mainly color, supplemented by shape." Teacher Zhang also called the forms of appreciation, mainly form appreciation, quality appreciation, color appreciation and grain appreciation, as form appreciation, quality appreciation, color appreciation and grain appreciation.
Later, Mr. Zhang proposed "one stone and three gases". In his articles, such as Revelation from Dahua, Contribution of Porcelain Rhyme, Three Rivers and Four Colors in China, and Simple and Elegant Wujiang Stone, the "Three Wonders" are discussed in detail. He pointed out: "The color of ancient gas is deep and ancient, the stone skin is lush and moist ... The color of expensive gas is gorgeous and moist, the stone skin is fresh and smooth ... The color of clear gas is elegant, and the stone skin is clean and smooth ...". In May, 2005, he once again pointed out in the article "Talking about Stone's Three Qi": "Expensive Qi has nothing to do with shape ... Although ancient Qi has some connection with texture and shape, it is not complete, but it has a great connection with stone skin color ... Clear Qi has some connection with shape, quality, color and grain ..." Teacher Zhang will be a great fossil.
My appreciation of Mr. Zhang's stone appreciation theory has gone through a tortuous process from beginning to confusion and then to doubt. Here, I would like to express my views and ask Mr. Zhang for advice. I also hope that the stone friends can participate in the discussion and improve together.
I think there are some defects in the theory of "subjective and single factor appreciation":
First, it is not scientific enough to define "main ornamental factors" by stone species. For example, the quality-oriented yellow wax stone can be divided into five grades, and the frozen wax stone has the best texture but the least quantity; Pyrophyllite is a siliceous rock, and its texture is not worse than many kinds of stones, even if it is a fine wax of grade four. As Mr. Zhang said, wax figures are mainly "appreciation", so why can't plastic wax figures with strange shapes be worse than frozen wax figures with general shapes? For another example, a few brightly colored jades are the best among large fossils, but because of their appreciation of colors, many large fossils with poor quality and out of shape are sought after by the market, so some people are suspected of discriminating against stone-making species. The color of Sanjiang is mainly purple and black, which can be said to be antique, but it is not appropriate to say that it is antique because it is mainly red and yellow. The "ancient altar" in the article "Simple but elegant and fresh Wujiang Stone" should have an ancient taste, but the modeling "dog" doesn't seem to appreciate the fresh taste. The "beauty pillow" we smell is obviously a faint fragrance. I'm afraid Laibin stone is more suitable for stone species famous for its ancient fragrance. Teacher Zhang takes Dahua, Sanjiang Cuisine and Wujiang Stone as the representatives of the "three flavors" and seems to be suspected of marketing "the main stone species".
Second, it confuses the relationship between the elements of stone appreciation, denies the dominant position of modeling in the elements of stone appreciation, and also confuses the difference between ornamental stones and jewelry and jade. Imagine, in the areas where painted pottery, Dahua, Peacock and Wujiang Sanjiang cuisine are the "main stone species" that value color and quality, even if there are thousands of customs, who will they tell?
Third, it is difficult to formulate and implement a unified evaluation standard for stone appreciation. Looking at the appraisal activities of ornamental stones in recent years. Some "shapeless" stones can still win prizes because of their good color and quality. It is said that at a stone exhibition in Shanghai, a painted pottery stone with a general shape won the prize on the grounds that the painted pottery stone is running out, and things are rare; There are three groups of eggs in Sanjiang, each group is dominated by red, yellow and black, which can't form any graphics, but it also won the grand prize for boldly proposing "Liu". There are also two yellow wax stones, one with excellent quality and color, and the other with good shape (humanoid stone with clear head, eyebrows, eyes, nose and ears) and poor quality (that is, the frozen wax stone is only partially damaged), but the former won the prize. We can't imagine how to formulate a unified national evaluation standard under the guidance of the view that the main ornamental elements can be different from stone species. Moreover, if the concept of stone appreciation based on shape is not established, even if the shape with the highest score is accurately determined, it is still difficult to establish its market value.

Fourth, it is inconsistent with the current mainstream of stone appreciation. It should be admitted that stone appreciators usually appreciate local stone species, and some stone species are really not easy to "shape". Stone-watchers only appreciate quality and color, while the pictures of ornamental stones such as Dahua, painted pottery, Sanjiang color, Wujiang stone and malachite that pay attention to quality and color almost all rely on "shape", even if they are far-fetched. This contradictory phenomenon shows that the comprehensive concept of "shape first, quality second" is actually becoming the mainstream of the current concept of stone appreciation. However, correct theoretical guidance is still needed.
The fifth is the separation of the traditional concept of stone appreciation. The traditional concept of stone appreciation is to grasp the core of modeling appreciation and make it concrete. Modern stone appreciation theory insists on giving priority to shape, quality, color and grain (or shape, quality and color), which is the inheritance and development of traditional stone appreciation view. However, the theory of "the main factor of appreciation" emphasizes quality and color too much, which leads to the separation from the traditional concept of stone appreciation, which is not conducive to the inheritance and development of the traditional theory of stone appreciation.

Sixth, it played down the artistry of ornamental stones. Ornamental stone is a work of art, which includes that the ornamental stone uses his creative ability to discover the artistry in the ornamental stone: he discovers the shape of the ornamental stone, and carries out conception, title, seating or combination according to the characteristics of the found shape, quality and color. Therefore, form is the essence and soul of ornamental stone art. I can't deny the artistic elements contained in ornamental stones by quality or color, but I can't agree that only ornamental stones with good quality or beautiful color will have higher artistry and even become works of art. I think it is appropriate to say "Ah, what a good texture and what a good baby". Some people regard it as "low artistic content" or "no cultural content". If this ornamental stone is to be publicized, exhibited and collected as a fine product and treasure, it is not surprising that people in the collection circle classify it as a work of art.
Undeniably, based on the theory of "single factor appreciation" and "stone has three qi", some "unformed" ornamental stones have become the "main stone species" in the market, which has promoted the development of ornamental stones in China to some extent. At the same time, however, this theory actually denies the dominant position of form in stone appreciation elements, separates modern and traditional stone appreciation culture, and has caused certain impact and confusion in formulating scientific stone appreciation standards and establishing correct stone appreciation art theory, which needs our serious consideration.
