Background:

In December of the 13th year of Jian 'an (2008), Liu Bei took the opportunity of Cao Cao's return to the north and listened to Zhuge Liang's plan to pacify the four counties in Jingnan, and appointed Zhuge Liang as the military commander in charge of the three counties of Lingling, Guiyang and Changsha, responsible for adjusting taxes and enriching military assets. In the 15th year of Jian 'an (2 10), Liu Bei took Pang Tong as the order of Leiyang, and Pang Tong was dismissed because of his poor performance. Zhuge Liang advised Liu Bei that Pang Tong was very talented and should not be underestimated.

So Liu Bei appointed Pang Tong as Zhizhong, who was regarded as Zhuge Liang, and tied with Zhuge Liang as a corps commander. In the 16th year of Jian 'an (2 1 1), Liu Zhang, an animal husbandry in Yizhou, egged on by Zhang Song, sent Fazheng to Jingzhou and invited Liu Bei to lead the troops to defend the security of Yizhou. Zhuge Liang thought it was now or never and advised Liu Bei to agree.

Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun and others were guarding Jingzhou, and Liu Bei personally led the army into Yizhou accompanied by counselor Pang Tong. In December of the following year, Liu Zhang discovered that Zhang Song was having an affair with Liu Bei, put Zhang Song to death, and ordered the guards to ban Liu Bei's military forces from passing. Liu Bei broke with Liu Zhang and attacked Chengdu. Liu Beiqi took the lead, occupied Fucheng (now Mianyang, Sichuan) and advanced into Chengdu.

In the 19th year of Jian 'an (2 14), Zhuge Liang heard that Liu Bei had attacked Chengdu and his strategist Pang Tong was killed. Guan Yu stayed in Jingzhou, led the troops up the Yangtze River with Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun, conquered Badong, and joined forces with Liu Bei in Chengdu. When he arrived in Jiangzhou, he defeated and captured Yan Yan, the prefect of Ba County. Liu Zhang was forced out of the city to surrender.
