Avoid washing diamonds with hot soapy water, steam and ultrasonic waves. If you want to wash diamonds with water, please use normal temperature water.
It's best to use professional diamond cloth, or even better, go to those big-name jewelry stores and ask them to help you clean diamonds, and it's not expensive.
However, if the loose diamond is obviously yellow, I still suggest that you send it to an authoritative appraisal laboratory such as IGI or GIA to see if it is a real diamond.
