In the southern Shaanxi area, there are mountains, rivers and Hepingba. Residents build various types of houses according to the terrain, raw materials and other conditions. Traditional housing includes stone houses, bamboo and wood houses, stilted buildings, three-sided courtyards and four-sided courtyards.

Stone houses: mostly built in mountainous areas, such as Zhenba, Ankang, and Xixiang mountainous areas, are very common. As the name suggests, stone houses use stone as the basic material. Usually the back wall is against the cliff, the walls are built with stone on three sides, and the roof wooden frame is paved with oil slates. Stone houses are wind and rain-resistant and low-cost.

Bamboo-wood house: The four walls are made of logs, with doors and windows. The roof is made of moso bamboo placed on wooden beams, then made of bamboo strips and covered with polygonum leaves. Some people put wood on the beams, spread dense bamboo on top, and plaster it to form an attic, with a fire pit on top for roasting and storing food. Bamboo and wooden houses are mostly built in Mobian and mountain depressions, and are common in mountainous areas such as Nanzheng, Ningqiang and Chenggu.

Diaojiaolou: mostly built in market towns along the river. The stilted building is supported by wooden piles or stones, with floor slabs on top, and the four walls are either made of wooden boards or bamboo rafts coated with plaster. The roof is tiled or thatched. Most of the windows of the stilted building face the river, so it is also called Wangjiang Building. Diaojiaolou is a development of ancient nest dwellings.

Sanheyuan and Siheyuan: more common in Pingba towns. The Sanheyuan has three main rooms, the main room in the middle, and 2-3 wing rooms in the east and west. The eaves extend out in front of the main house, which can be used for eating and resting. The wing room is smaller than the main room, connected by walls at both ends, and opens to the south in the middle of the wall. The Siheyuan is composed of the main room, the wing rooms and the gatehouse. There is a well in the middle, which is more elegant than the Sanheyuan. The living rooms in Sanheyuan and Siheyuan are made of adobe, masonry, and wood as basic materials, and their doors mostly face south. Avoid facing west. With the development of the local economy, there are more and more brick houses in rural areas and urban buildings.
