When we cultivate miscellaneous bonsai, we often make the main branch into a cloud sheet, and there are many branches on the cloud sheet, which will drive the extension of the main branch, and the secondary branch will grow thicker, so that the whole trunk will become thick at both ends and small in the middle. That is to say, barbell branches, which we often talk about, seriously affect the coordination of the whole tree potential, not to mention the proportional transition and so on. How to solve such problems when they are found? Here are several ways for your reference.
the first method: pruning
when we cultivate the main branches, we always keep the reserved branches. If the branches cultivated now are thin in the middle and thick at the two ends, we can cut them off and re-cultivate them according to the situation. However, if this happens on the first branch, it is necessary to make a choice. After all, not everyone is willing to go up and down the knife directly from the first branch. Here, if your bonsai shape has been basically formed, the cost of re-cultivation will be great, so don't go under the knife, you can use the latter method. But if it's still in production, don't hesitate to cut it off and re-cultivate it.
the second way: tapping
some bonsai, the shape has been formed, but there are problems in the subsequent growth, and barbell branches with thick ends and thin middle appear, but it is not obvious yet. We can make use of the characteristics of plant wound healing, gently hammer the thin part with a blunt instrument to cause the wound, then wrap it with breathable materials and carefully maintain it until the wound is healed. After healing, the cortical tissue will bulge to achieve the purpose of thickening.
The third method: peeling
Some branches with obvious barbell branches need to undergo major surgery to achieve the purpose of thickening. At the position where it needs to be thickened, about half of the skin of the ring is peeled off, and the width is generally better not to exceed 1 cm, depending on the size of the tree. Apply wound healing agent to the peeled wound, dry it, and wrap it with moss, cotton cloth, etc. After the wound is healed, the cortical tissue at the wound will bulge to thicken the middle part of the barbell branch. This method should not be rushed, but should be done step by step. After the first wound is completely healed, the other half of the bark should be peeled off, and step by step according to the above method until the barbell branches return to normal.
the fourth way: breaking the stem
in the production of bonsai shapes, the trunk usually needs to be bent, but some trunks can't be bent with ordinary flat tie, because generally speaking, the trunk is very thick, so if such trunks need to be bent, they need to be bent by breaking the stem or sawing. However, the way of breaking the stem will destroy the cortex and internal wood fibers of the main barbell branch, and then use the self-repair ability of the plant to restore the wound. In order to achieve the purpose of thickening.
it is relatively difficult to break the rod to achieve the purpose of thickening. At the beginning, fill the broken place with some pebbles, press the broken place and twist it gently from left to right, in order to destroy the fibers of xylem, only minor injuries can be done, and you can't cross it. Then apply wound healing agent to the broken rod, fix it in a flat way, and wrap it with breathable material for maintenance. In the subsequent growth process, the pebbles filled in the broken stem will be squeezed by the growth of trees. Finally, after the wound heals, the wound will be deformed and thickened because of the squeezing of pebbles by xylem, which will naturally change the original small parts.
These four ways to deal with barbell branches in bonsai are all effective, except the first one, which has no technical content, and is suitable for cultivation at the beginning. When making shapes, the other three ways are all aimed at the shaped bonsai. If friends use it, they'd better find some senior bonsai makers for guidance and communication, and don't mention the knife. Don't blame me for failure. Experience is still very important.
