What are the industrial uses of silver?
The demand for silver is mostly for industrial purposes: at present, the monetary demand for silver has gradually given way to industrial demand, among which electronic and electrical materials and photosensitive materials are the main ones. Traditional craft ornaments also occupy a certain market share and have many applications in medicine and antibacterial materials. First, the thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity of silver are among the best among metals, and the consumption of silver ranks first among all kinds of electronic materials, which can be roughly divided into electrical contact materials, composite materials, energy industry materials and welding materials. Silver exists in highly sensitive physical instrument components, joints of important contacts in various relays, solders of important components in radio systems, contacts in various automation devices, rockets, submarines, computers, nuclear devices and communication systems. At present, the global annual output of silver and silver-based electrical contact materials is 2900-3000 tons. Secondly, silver halide photosensitive materials have always been one of the fields with the largest amount of silver. At present, several photosensitive materials with the largest production and sales volume are photographic film, photographic paper, X-ray film, fluorescent information recording film, electron microscope photographic film and printing film. In the 1990s, the world photography industry used about 6,000-6,500 tons of silver. However, due to the innovation of electronic digital imaging technology and the development of photographic equipment industry, the amount of silver halide photosensitive materials has decreased. Nevertheless, the application of silver halide photosensitive materials is irreplaceable in some aspects, and there is still a great market space. Third, silver is also widely used to make jewelry, ornaments, silverware, tableware, medals and commemorative coins. Silver is also one of the indispensable raw materials for medicine and antibacterial materials. Surgical silver is mainly used in acupuncture, silver thread is used to sew injured bones and connective tissue, silver drainage tube, silver gold, silver mercury and silver tin alloy are used as filling materials for tooth restoration. Silver is also called "bionic metal" because silver ions and silver compounds can kill or inhibit bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi.
