The composition of the sagger

The small sagger is composed of a box wall (also called a box ring) and a box bottom. The process of making the box wall is roughly as follows: first take some special bamboo pieces, pass them through the thickness of the bamboo pieces with strings, then put them upright, and close the two ends to form a circle. The inner side is fixed with an iron circle, and the outer side is fixed with an iron circle. Tie with rope. Then apply the box mud to the outer wall of the ring tube. When it reaches a certain thickness, use a cloth dipped in water to smooth the outside, and then use an iron sheet to trim and shape it. After finishing, remove the iron ring on the inside of the cylinder, shrink the cylinder and take it out from the inside, then smooth the inner wall and shape it. After the box wall is made, move it to another place to dry for a while. The process of making the bottom of the stem is roughly as follows: first, take a special iron ring with a diameter equal to or slightly larger than the outer diameter of the box wall, put the box mud into the circle, and step on the box mud with your feet to make the box mud evenly fill all parts of the circle. Then put a ball of box mud in the center and pat it tightly. After the bottom of the box is made, let it dry for a while. When the box wall and box bottom are properly dry, dip the edge of the box wall in box slurry, place it on the box bottom, and then trim the bonding area smooth.

The large sagger system consists of straight walls and inclined walls. The method of making straight walls is roughly the same as making the walls of small utensils. The method of making the inclined wall is similar to that of porcelain blank drawing. However, because the mud particles are relatively coarse, water must be used during fine trimming. After the straight wall and the inclined wall are made, they are bonded to each other with box glue. The bonding method is basically the same as the bonding method for small saggers.

The finished bowl is still a green one (commonly known as an earthen box), and the earthen box cannot yet be used to hold fired porcelain. , before it can be used to hold the porcelain blank.

Currently, the refractory materials used to make industrial saggers include mullite, corundum mullite, alumina, etc.
