Laodang Yizhuang

Have you ever seen this famous contemporary doctor? It’s hard to believe that he has already passed 69 years. You see that pair of eyes shining with wisdom scanning everything in front of you, showing vitality and high momentum; listening to him is not only beneficial, but also a kind of enjoyment. His conversation is sharp and vivid, full of witty words, and exciting. You It was as if he could feel his highly efficient thinking machine running endlessly. Not long ago, at a heart-to-heart meeting between famous scientists and college students and graduate students organized by the China Association for Science and Technology, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, and the All-China Federation of Students, Wu Jieping said when talking about age: "I really appreciate the great painter Liu Haisu saying that he is 'ninety years old.' . Some elderly people abroad no longer say 'I'm 50 years old', but 'I'm 70 years young'."

Wu Jieping admitted that time is limited and the natural laws of metabolism are irresistible. This made him urge himself to cherish time like gold, to forge ahead and to be diligent. His red heart is full of passion, and his ardent feelings of dedication to the revitalization of China form a strong attractive charm. He safely handed over the responsibilities of the President of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the President of the Union Medical College of China to the next generation, and he served as honorary president and president. He is a member of the Department of Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and also serves as the president of the Chinese Medical Association, chairman of the Urological Society, director of the Institute of Urology of Peking University, chairman of the China Drug Inspection Commission, and vice president of the China Family Planning Association. He presided over meetings and organized activities, and also kept the secretaries who helped him arrange the schedule busy. He also has to edit publications, write books, and supervise doctoral students. He also has many titles in foreign academic circles and travels abroad to participate in various activities almost every year. I just came back from a heart-to-heart meeting with college students at the end of April. I was still undecided and flew to the other side of the ocean to work on the affairs of the Medical College and Union Medical College.

In recent years, he has given four lectures and reports, focusing on helping the young generation study hard and become talented as soon as possible. He is always looking toward the future, always looking for new goals that can propel his career forward. Recently he taught "Clinical Practice and Thinking" to medical students and young doctors, which was very popular. This is his experience that has been refined and sublimated from his many years of practical experience and raised to a theoretical level. It is a new topic that no one has ever talked about at home and abroad. As a result, the audience was very enthusiastic, exceeding the original quota, and the audio tape of the report was transcribed and played many times. He also spoke about this content at the graduation ceremony of a foreign medical school, and foreign friends were amazed.

Wu Jieping, who today has outstanding achievements and is praised at home and abroad, cannot be shaped by day and night efforts. He came here after more than half a century of hard work, overcoming obstacles and overcoming obstacles. Let's turn the time forward 60 years and explore step by step what "secrets" to success he had on his way to becoming a talent!

Pursue individuality

As a child, Wu Jieping was lively, naughty and lovable.

His eldest brother, who is ten years older than him and a well-known pediatric epidemiologist, Professor Wu Ruiping, has talked about Wu Jieping several times and always gushed about it: "He has been fond of using his brain since he was a child. He also pays attention to everything, is willing to study, and also wants to play. Come up with new tricks." He gave an example: There was a kind of intellectual game of flipping copper plates. Six copper plates, three heads and three tails, were arranged in a row. Only two coins were allowed to be moved to form a cross sequence of one head and one tail. Little Wu Jieping frowned and thought carefully. He sat for a long time without eating or sleeping, and he would not stop until he achieved his goal. Where there is a will, there is a way, and the problem was finally solved by him. "Thinking is the organ of the heart." Wu Jieping learned to use his brain to think about problems since he was a child, and he had to make everything clear. This sown good seeds for exploring innovation and achieving results in study and research in the following decades.

Their father, Wu Jingyi, was an upright industrialist who worked as a manager at Tianjin Investment Promotion Bureau and Baocheng Cotton Mill. The family conditions were good. Wu Jie usually plays in the courtyard with his younger brothers. One time, he had a whim and wanted to come up with a new trick - playing ball on a bicycle. The younger brothers were attracted to watch the second brother's wonderful performance with wide eyes. Unexpectedly, the success was only instantaneous. Wu Jieping was not proud of it, and he fell to the ground with the car and others, injuring his right arm. His eldest brother, who was studying at Union Medical College, took him to Beijing for treatment. To this day, I still can't stretch and bend that arm freely, but I can't tell clearly. Although he suffered some physical hardships, he enjoyed the fun of innovation, which did not prevent him from becoming a surgeon in the future.

Wu Jieping came to Beijing for treatment and stayed in his brother's dormitory. All senior students at Xiehe University had a room per person, which was convenient. Sometimes the elder brothers play bridge after school, and there is always a small audience next to them. There are not many days, and a child actually gets to watch this complicated game. Professor Wu Ruiping, who is nearly eighty years old, clearly remembers that a few years later he spent five dollars to buy a bridge book called "GOld BOOk", and Wu Jieping took it to read. After entering university, Wu Jieping became proficient in this art and became an expert in playing bridge.

Brothers Wu Jieping are now famous medical experts who have made contributions. This is related to family education. The father tried his best to create conditions for his children when they were enlightened. He asked old gentlemen to teach ancient books and engineers from cotton mills to teach them English and arithmetic. As a result, Wu Ruiping went directly to high school without going to elementary school or junior high school; Wu Jieping also passed through elementary school and was admitted to Tianjin Huiwen Middle School. The old father’s words of instruction still ring in my ears: When you grow up, don’t pursue fame and fortune in the officialdom. You don’t have that kind of backing. Don’t do business either. It’s better to study hard and learn skills so that you can earn a living based on your skills in the future. The old man wants his sons to study medicine and attend the prestigious Union Medical College. It is rare for parents in that era to be so wise, and it can be regarded as an enlightened family. Wu Jieping lived and grew up there and benefited a lot.

At the beginning of this century, the "Prince Yu's Mansion" of the Qing Dynasty relics in Dongdan Santiao, Beijing, with its high walls and deep courtyard, was bought and demolished by American oil magnate Rockefeller. It took five years to build a set of polished bricks on the original site. The palace-style buildings with seams and green tiles and cornices are the Union Medical College. The oil king built a monument for himself and called it "Oil Prince's Mansion", which is homophonic to "Yu Prince's Mansion". When Wu Jieping was a child, he came to Beijing for treatment and stayed there. He felt as if he had entered a dazzling and mysterious maze. Without his father's guidance, he would have made up his mind to study at Union College just like he did when he was playing with coins when he was young. He graduated from middle school at the age of 16 and was successfully admitted to Yenching University. He completed three years of study in the preparatory class of Union Medical College and officially entered this "Prince's Palace" in 1936. That was very enviable back then. Xiehe's academic program lasts for eight years and is registered in the United States. Upon graduation, he is awarded a doctorate by New York University. Most of the professors are Americans and all teaching is in English. Each year, only 20 to 30 people are selected from among the many top candidates across the country. The learning requirements are extremely strict, and a score of 75 is required to pass. By the time of graduation, there are often only a dozen people left in a class. Students study hard but are still inevitably eliminated.

Wu Jieping gave himself this comment: "I am very naughty. I didn't study hard in middle school or college. I am not a good student who studies hard. But I didn't lose anything, and my mind didn't stop, but I was active." "He's quite naughty. When studying anatomy, the students were working hard to review the class. They picked up pieces of bones and looked left and right, and touched left and right. They also practiced putting a piece in their pocket, and they could tell what bone it was by just reaching out and touching it. Wu Jieping came over and said with a mysterious smile: "Being able to touch doesn't count. Let me show you a new one." He grabbed a piece of bone, threw it up high, and caught it with a bang without looking at it. Everyone: "Believe it or not, I can tell right away what kind of bone this is. "The students were stunned as if they were watching a magic trick. After listening to Wu Jieping's self-questions and answers, he checked and found out that it was good. Afterwards, he admitted that he had made preparations in advance and deliberately deceived others. Wu Jieping said: "I hate studying to death the most. Book. "He kept playing pranks and playing tricks on people. The classmates just thought he was smart and had many clever ideas, so they didn't blame him. When he was studying parasites, he was not interested in memorizing this mosquito or that fly. This naughty guy The student was trying another trick. He caught a fly from the dining room, stuck it on a cork with a pin, and covered it with a small test tube. He held it up and asked, "Look at this." What? "Everyone in the school didn't recognize him after taking the test. Wu Jieping couldn't help but chuckle to himself, and said in a long voice: "This is called a house fly, the most common one! ”

In Concordia, people compete fiercely to climb to the top of the ivory tower. They usually have to lose a few pounds during the exam, and some put away their beds to urge themselves to study hard all night.

Wu Jieping was different. He took it easy and did some homework, but he still had fun, ate and went to bed on time, ate well and slept soundly. Professor Cai Rusheng, consultant and thoracic medicine expert at Fuwai Hospital, was in the same class as Wu Jieping. He said: "Wu Jieping never stops studying. He can grasp the key points in his studies, is flexible and effective, and it seems that he does not study hard, but his test scores are always good." For this reason. , he won a scholarship. When the graduation ceremony is held, according to regulations, the student with the best grades in the class must hold a sign and lead the class into the venue. Wu Jieping has received this honor.

Nature is not always sunny and warm as spring. How can a person always have smooth sailing? In 1939, when Wu Jieping was in the sixth grade, the disease suddenly struck him. He contracted renal tuberculosis, had his right kidney removed, and had to take a year off from school. He did not give in to difficulties. While recuperating, he continued to use his flexible and effective methods to study and master new knowledge.

Graduation was a year late, but Wu Jieping’s eight years at Union College was solid.

Directed take-off

"Thinking, exploring, and innovating" - the basic characteristics of Wu Jieping's ideological and character, which have taken shape since his childhood, and Xiehe has further developed in eight years. He has graduated and has skills. The profession of a doctor is an "iron rice bowl", not to mention that he graduated from Union College, which is known as the "gold medal" university, so he is a "golden rice bowl". He exceeded the goal set by his father to "study hard and rely on your skills to earn a living in the future."

However, can Wu Jieping be content with making money to eat? Think about it, during his eight years at Concordia, "the Chinese nation was at its most dangerous time," followed by the Japanese fascist invasion and the loss of large swathes of the country. Due to the delicate and special relationship between Japan and the United States at that time, the American-run Union Medical College still had a "quiet desk" where the Chinese students who had become slaves to the subjugation had conflicting feelings and ignored what was happening outside the window. Just read medical books. Wu Jieping, who is good at thinking, is pondering over and over again: Why do Japanese imperialists dare to bully us? It’s not that we are weak! He used to be very envious of Japan's Meiji Restoration and Ito Hirobumi, which turned Japan into a powerful country. When will China become strong and prosperous? He developed a new pursuit and yearning.

The Pacific War started and Wu Jieping just graduated. Concordia closed down and people went their separate ways to find their own way. Professor Xie Yuanfu, one of the earliest urology experts in my country, liked Wu Jieping the most when he was teaching at Xiehe University. Under his influence and guidance, Wu Jieping chose the urology major. Xie Yuanfu left Xiehe and went to Zhonghe Hospital (the predecessor of Peking University People's Hospital), taking Wu Jieping with him. Wu Jieping did an outstanding job as a resident doctor and chief resident doctor.

Wu Jieping first came into contact with our underground party in 1943 during the fall of China. He was once happy about the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, but his illusions were soon shattered. At this time, he came into contact with several underground members of the Communist Party of China and treated their illnesses. At the same time, he accepted some revolutionary principles from them and began to understand the Communist Party. His eyes felt brighter.

At that time, Guan Songtao, China's outstanding surgical expert and brain surgery expert, went to Peking University School of Medicine to preside over the Department of Surgery. He asked Wu Jieping to help him establish the Department of Surgery. On the one hand, he served as a surgical lecturer and on the other hand, he served as the chief resident doctor of Zhonghe Hospital. Wu Jieping readily accepted it.

Professor Xie Yuanfu loved talents very much, and in 1947 he managed to send Wu Jieping to the University of Chicago in the United States for further study. Wu Jieping's mentor, Professor Huggins, was the founder of modern endocrine therapy for tumors and a Nobel Prize winner. He admired this young Chinese very much and tried every means to keep Wu Jieping in the United States. At that time, the University of Chicago was undergoing extensive construction to build a research building for Huggins. Huggins placed a blueprint in front of Wu Jieping, pointed sincerely and said: "This is your laboratory..." Huggins also promised attractive benefits and mobilized Wu Jieping to pick up his family. However, Wu Jieping was unmoved. He was thinking about who could save the disaster-ridden motherland under the weight of three mountains. He already understood this. With a pure heart and a sincere attitude towards serving the country, Wu Jieping gave a firm answer with a clear attitude. He didn't even bring any luggage and hurried back to his motherland on the eve of the birth of New China. In less than a month, the ancient city of Beijing welcomed the mighty People's Liberation Army. Wu Jieping was deeply gratified that he had a way to serve the country, and he began to write a new historical chapter in which he made great achievements.

Wu Jieping returned to Beijing Medical College and treated, taught, and conducted research in the First Affiliated Hospital. He became an associate professor in his thirties and became a professor a few years later. He believes that the Communist Party respects knowledge and cherishes talents. He is fully trusted and feels that it has great potential. He served as chief of surgery and vice president. In 1951, he led the Beijing volunteer surgical team to resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea in rescuing critically injured people during the fierce battle. He achieved outstanding results and won great merit. He worked hard and had many original ideas. He has become the first-class surgical expert in my country before he was still young. He made an indelible contribution to the construction and development of urology in my country and was recognized as a leader in the discipline.

During his intense and busy work, Wu Jieping also made some philosophical reflections on issues such as the value of life, ideals and beliefs. In the early days of liberation, Wu Jieping saw clearly how the Communist Party played a leading and core role and what brilliant results it achieved in just a few years. He also absorbed positive nutrients from the intellectual transformation movement. He confided to the party his long-standing true feelings.

What an unforgettable year 1956! He remembered the scene when he raised his clenched fist and swore an oath under the party flag on January 27th to "fight for the cause of communism for the rest of his life." This is a serious choice made by a scientist after years of careful observation and thinking; it is a leap from quantitative change to qualitative change in the thinking of a senior intellectual. Wu Jieping, like many scientists, is calm-minded, diligent in thinking, and unsmiling. At first glance, he has an almost cold face. At this time, there is still no big change in his face, but his heart is constantly warming up and full of emotions. Passion turns into infinite power. He feels that starting from the specific business of serving the people, all work is extending into the distance, and every step forward is one step closer to the big goal. Politics is not an empty concept. The task of revolution is not only to understand the world, but also to transform it. Isn’t this exactly the bounden duty of a scientist?

Wu Jieping's students said that he was a typical example of "one who first becomes a professional before becoming famous". They not only learned medical knowledge from him, but also learned from him his scientific thinking methods that are good at thinking, analyzing and identifying things. The relationship between red and expert should be very clear, but some intellectuals are still hesitant and talking about it. This is naturally a normal phenomenon, so let it continue to be a topic of discussion among people! Wu Jieping had a well-thought-out approach. He had analyzed and compared the old and new societies, differentiated between his motherland and foreign countries, and his experience was profound. Facts educated and prompted him to establish lofty ideals and find a satisfactory and reliable home.

Wu Jieping, who returned, tied his personal ideals, pursuits, and fate of success or failure to the highest interests of the motherland, and dissolved everything he had into the cause of the party and the people. He felt that the sky was high and the sky was high. With a broad mind, I can soar and gallop as I please. He entered a higher realm of thought, exerted his talents and skills, and became more powerful, and his endless potential burst out.

Wu Jieping has always opposed studying to death, so how can he live up to it? He didn't know much about it at the beginning; after becoming a doctor and starting to get in touch with reality, he slowly summed up some experiences and understandings. He feels that knowledge does not give people the ability to solve practical problems. Only through application in practice and continuous thinking can one improve his abilities. Therefore, he believes that we must first solve the problem of combining practice, knowledge and thinking. He kept in mind the famous saying of Pasteur, the founder of modern microbiology and the famous French microbiologist: "Opportunity favors the prepared mind." He consciously trains himself to have a prepared mind, asks himself questions at any time, urges himself to think, develops the habit of thinking, and does not commit the problem of "opportunity knocks on the door but ignores it", and does not let go of any opportunity to improve himself. Chance. This became his inexhaustible "magic weapon".

Being a doctor is not easy. "Repairing" the bodies of advanced animals with various special functions is not like repairing machines, which can be disassembled at will and done intuitively. Whether a doctor is skilled and innovative often depends on whether he is good at thinking and diligent in exploring. Acute appendicitis is a common disease. It is not difficult to diagnose and the surgery is simple. Wu Jieping did not simply do it. He thought carefully and analyzed carefully. Is the location of the patient's appendicitis on the left, right, upper, or lower part of the intestine? Although the appendix is ??not ruptured, what impact might it have on the peritoneum? Are there fecal stones in the appendix? ...Try to ask yourself to think carefully and concretely before making a diagnosis. This kind of surgery is generally successful, but Wu Jieping's surgery is more "beautiful", causes less pain for the patient, and avoids other problems caused by poor consideration in advance. He feels that he has gained something different every time he undergoes an operation. He treats any patient in this way, and does not allow himself to just follow the old methods that have been used for many years. In this way, you not only need to think carefully, but also deliberate over and over again. Experienced doctors are well aware of the complexity of diseases and their own shortcomings, so they treat diagnosis and treatment as if they are facing an abyss or walking on thin ice. Being a doctor has a heavy responsibility. This is a major issue related to a person's life and human health.

Wu Jieping is original and has achieved results of "more than five years and ten years", thanks to this extremely charming "prepared mind".

Great Contribution

At the Institute of Urology of Beijing Medical University, Professor Gu Fangliu, who was in his early fifties, talked about Wu Jieping’s academic achievements and outstanding contributions, and his admiration and cordiality were beyond words. He was the first graduate student brought out by Professor Wu Jieping in the early 1950s. He has been studying, researching and producing results with his mentor. Professor Gu first mentioned Professor Wu Jieping's new concept of contralateral hydronephrosis in renal tuberculosis in 1953. He said that this innovative idea has enabled many patients who had been considered to have bilateral renal tuberculosis to be incurable in the past to receive correct treatment and regain a new life. This was a breakthrough in urology, which immediately received great attention at home and abroad and was widely adopted.

"As early as 1959, Wu Jieping also designed a bladder expansion surgery using the ileocecum, which was successfully applied to patients with clinical bladder contracture. This surgery was only mentioned in European and American books and magazines in the 1970s and even the 1980s. It is introduced to readers as the latest surgical method.

"In the 1950s, under the leadership of Professor Wu Jieping, Peking University was the first to widely use percutaneous nephrotomy for diagnosis, and also used percutaneous nephrostomy. The treatment cases were earlier than the percutaneous renal surgery that is popular internationally today. At that time, adrenal surgery had not yet become popular internationally. Wu Jieping was the first to enter this field in my country. This work caused great shock in the Japanese medical community.

At the 19th International Society of Surgery in September 1961, Wu Jieping clearly pointed out that the symptoms of cortisolism (i.e. Cushing's syndrome) are often accompanied by hair loss and alopecia, which attracted great attention. His report added a new dimension to the diagnosis of cortisolism. New content.

His outstanding contribution to adrenal surgery was that he clearly proposed the new concept of adrenal medullary hyperplasia in the 1960s and confirmed it as an independent clinical disease. The paper published in the English version of the Chinese Medical Journal was included in the 1979 "Annals of American Urology"; in 1983, Wu Jieping was the first to report the long-term follow-up of patients after surgery at the 30th International Surgical Society.

He proposed that "the volume of giant hydronephrosis in children should be based on the 24-hour average urine output exceeding the age". This standard has been recognized by the urology community.

In the 1970s, he also designed a special catheter to improve the operation of prostate hyperplasia, which greatly reduced the bleeding volume and shortened the operation time during transvesical prostatectomy. It was called "Wu's catheter" and has been Promote domestically.

As a urology expert, he attached great importance to family planning work. In 1957, he was the first to inject phenylmercuric acetate into the seminal vesicles during vasectomy to kill remaining sperm, so that the sterilization effect could be achieved immediately after surgery (in the past, it was generally done after surgery) It takes two or three months to complete). Immediately after the report, it was promoted nationwide, effectively promoting family planning work.

There is such an episode: One day in 1956, Wu Jieping was reading in the library. Professor Lin Qiaozhi, a famous gynecologist in my country, walked over with her unique light and fast steps and said in rich Fujian Mandarin: " Wu Jieping, we are going to implement family planning, the girls belong to me, and the boys belong to you!" There is a clear understanding. Wu Jieping felt it was his duty to take out his "magic weapon" that was good at thinking, and went through the male methods that could promote family planning. After careful consideration, he quickly came up with a new method to improve the efficiency of vasectomy. Speaking of this, Wu Jieping raised his head and laughed, saying, "What's the point? It's just that Lin Qiaozhi knocked me, and I figured it out after using my brain. To be honest, it's worthless." Comrade Professor, too modest. . Why has this century-old surgery never been developed in the past? Why did the United States publish it as a new method in medical journals in 1974, 17 years after you "explained it"? Isn’t this the crystallization of your selflessness in exploring and pursuing the scientific progress of the motherland, the people and mankind!

Many of Wu Jieping’s students are now professors and associate professors. They are still attracted by the scene in the classroom: the short Professor Wu stood behind the desk and first looked at all the students present. classmates, the whole audience immediately fell silent. His lectures are efficient, vivid and concrete, with prominent central ideas, rigorous thinking and logical thinking, and refined and philosophical language that is fascinating. Everyone likes to listen to it and finds it interesting, easy to understand and easy to remember.

Clinicians love to check wards with Wu Jieping and listen to Wu Jieping preside over case discussions. Just like giving lectures, he inspired and encouraged everyone to think more and discuss more. What people are most interested in is that Wu Jieping can often discover and raise unusual questions and give new enlightenment from even a case record of common diseases or an ordinary X-ray film. Such activities are often packed with seats and the atmosphere is very lively, benefiting both peers and juniors. The charm of Professor Wu Jieping cannot be understood and measured from a secular perspective.

The Institute of Urology led by Wu Jieping is nationally famous. Over the past decades, it has trained a large number of doctors and researchers from all over the world for further study. 120 of them have become the backbone of their respective units, and some have become outstanding. Contributions include Professor Mei Hua from Sun Yat-sen Medical College.

The patients who are most grateful to Wu Jieping are the patients who were deeply affected by his life-saving grace.

On September 11, 1982, "People's Daily" published an article by Lei Jiangbin from Wuhan City, thanking Professor Wu Jieping for performing two surgeries on her twice in more than 20 years and curing her congenital bladder. A persistent disease of urethral malformation. She said that Professor Wu Jieping is so approachable and cares so much about ordinary patients. This is such a serious and responsible attitude! He is indeed a real doctor!

Wu Jieping also had the experience of failure. When he first learned to be a doctor, due to negligence, he missed examination items when seeing a doctor, and was criticized by the old professor; but more importantly, it was the relief and joy he felt after success, which made him more confident. Work diligently and conscientiously.

The most discerning person is the monument in our hearts. Premier Zhou appreciated and trusted Wu Jieping and sent him to take charge of major and special medical and health care tasks at home and abroad many times. In 1962, Premier Zhou sent him to lead a Chinese medical team to Indonesia to treat President Sukarno's left kidney whose function was blocked due to kidney stones. After four months of hard work, he achieved very satisfactory results. Suharto, the president's personal physician and Minister of Commerce, specially invited reporters from various countries to the presidential villa, issued a statement to express his gratitude, and introduced Chinese medical experts headed by Wu Jieping to meet with the reporters (Xinhua News Agency published the news on May 7, 1962 ). The statement said that the Vienna medical team that treated the president had believed that if the president's kidneys could not restore function within three months or six months at the latest, surgery would be necessary. Thanks to the treatment of the Chinese medical team, President Sukarno's health is extremely good, especially his left kidney has restored function. As a result, the president can now avoid surgery. President Sukarno and his wife hosted a banquet to send off the Chinese experts.

Wu Jieping was awarded the Indonesian National Medal Level 2 for this purpose. From then on, Sukarno also wanted to invite Wu Jieping when he had a cold.

Two years ago, a Yugoslavian patient sought treatment, and Wu Jieping cured his disease. After he returned to China, his reputation spread widely. Later, friends from Yugoslavia came to see Wu Jieping if they were sick, no matter which department they belonged to.

This versatile and famous doctor is so charming, and his influence far exceeds our 9.6 million square kilometers. Wu Jieping has undertaken various special medical care tasks at home and abroad for decades. There should be more fascinating stories, but they are beyond the scope of this article.
