How to Check Topology Errors in ArcGIS

The first picture and the second picture are the regional master plan (Blocks.shp) and the regional detailed plan (Parcels.shp) respectively. Today, we will take these two diagrams as examples to demonstrate how to verify the topology. First, enter the Catalog directory and find the data set that stores these two files.

Then right-click, find the function option of the topology in the New option, click Enter to open the following page, and then click Next.

In the first line of the new topology, enter a name for the topology. You can modify the name of the topology with different tolerances. Finally, click Next at the bottom of the page.

When selecting a feature class, you must select at least two items before you can check the topology. After selecting them, click Next.

When entering the grade, it must be the same as the grade of the feature class, as shown below. Enter 1 and click Next.

Then make a rule and click Add Rule.

Enter the Add Rule page, and select Non-Residential in the Blocks layer from the elements of the first feature class. Rule selection cannot overlap with other elements, and the element of the third feature class selects Residential in the Parcels layer. This provision means that the residential areas in the master plan cannot overlap with the non-residential areas in the detailed plan.

After making the rules, check the rules again, and then click Next below.

All your settings for the topology will appear in the new page. After checking, click Finish.

After the topology is established, the following dialog box will appear, prompting that the topology has been created. Do you want to verify it? Click Yes. After the verification is completed, the screen shown in Figure 2 will appear, and the place marked in red is the place where the topology test found the error.
