Attention should be paid to pruning potted white orchids in northern China
Attention should be paid to the pruning of potted orchids in the north. Even after careful management, the lower parts of the main branches and side branches often lose their leaves after several years of growth. Gardeners call this phenomenon "pants off", which is very unsightly. The solution is to cut all the branches short, preferably in the middle and late May. Pruning can stimulate the dormant buds and lateral buds of nodes to germinate again, thus reducing the crown, preventing the original branches from growing again and making axillary buds germinate new branches and leaves. After pruning, the number of lateral branches can be increased by 3-4 times. On the original branches, 3-4 new lateral branches can grow, so that not only the crown is full, but also the flowering parts will be greatly increased. When using the above method to update the crown, the incision must be located above the lateral bud, 0.6 cm away from the terminal bud, so as not to leave a dry post. It should also be noted that when selecting cutting buds, the buds that grow to the periphery of the crown must be selected as cutting buds, and the extended branches that germinate and grow from them should grow outward, otherwise the new branches will cross each other, resulting in disorder of the tree. After pruning, in order to prevent the cutting edge from drying, it is best to wrap the cutting edge with a small piece of film or paint it to prevent the dry rot from affecting the germination of the cutting edge buds.
