Jiangnan in the broad sense generally refers to the south of the Yangtze River, and Jiangnan in the narrow sense generally refers to the area south of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
The six ancient towns in Jiangnan Water Town are: Zhouzhuang; Tongli; Luzhi; Xitang; Wuzhen; Nanxun.
1. Zhouzhuang:
Located in Zhouzhuang Ancient Town, Kunshan, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province. Zhouzhuang Ancient Town is surrounded by water. The town is formed by the river, the streets are formed by the water, and the street is the city. It is one of the six ancient towns in Jiangnan and was rated as a famous historical and cultural town in China in 2003. Zhouzhuang has a long history and is a typical Jiangnan water town with unique cultural landscape. It is a treasure of Chinese water town culture and Wu local culture.
2. Tongli:
Located in Wujiang District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, the town was established in the Song Dynasty. 15 small rivers in the shape of "Chuan" divide the ancient town area into seven small islands, and 49 ancient bridges connect it into one. It is famous for "small bridges, flowing water, and people". On October 9, 2018, Tongli Town was selected into the top 100 national comprehensive strength towns in 2018. It is a 5A attraction.
3. Luzhi:
Located in Wuzhong District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, it is an ancient Chinese water town cultural town of the same age as the ancient city of Suzhou and with a history of more than 2,500 years. The town is located 25 kilometers southeast of Suzhou City and is the east gate of Wuzhong District. It borders Wusong River to the north, Chenghu Lake to the south, Suzhou Industrial Park to the west, and Kunshan Nangang Town to the east. Luzhi Town has been awarded as a famous historical and cultural town in China.
4. Xitang:
It is located in Jiashan County, Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, at the junction of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai. Xitang has a long history. It is one of the birthplaces of ancient Wuyue culture and one of the six ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River. It is an ancient water town with a thousand years of Wu local culture. In October 2003, it was included in the first batch of Chinese historical and cultural towns.
5. Wuzhen:
Located in Tongxiang, Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, it is one of the first batch of Chinese historical and cultural towns, one of China’s top ten charming towns, a national beautiful town, and a national 5A tourism The scenic spot is known as "China's last waterside home". It has a history of more than 7,000 years of civilization and a history of 1,300 years of town building. It is a typical ancient water town in the south of the Yangtze River in China and is known as the "Land of Fish and Rice and the House of Silk".
6. Nanxun:
It is located in Nanxun District, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, at the junction of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai. It is an ancient town in the south of the Yangtze River with abundant human resources and a combination of Chinese and Western architecture. Nanxun Ancient Town is known as the "Culture State" and the "Hometown of Poems and Books". It has many famous figures and is one of the six ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River.
