How to prune willow at seedling stage
At seedling stage, willow should prune the residual branches, dead branches and multi-headed branches in time, select the leading branches in time, remove the competitive branches in time, and prune the redundant side branches to promote the thickening and growth.

The pruning of trees should pay attention to the beautiful and generous tree shape, which is unique and suitable for viewing. For the willow with the top cut off, it should be cultivated into a "four-sided bucket" or a "three-legged" shape to avoid a "V" shape with two stems. Pruning should pay attention to "pruning in winter and controlling the side in summer", that is, pruning strong trees in winter and lightly pruning weak trees, focusing on pruning upright and competitive branches from the base. In summer, we should control the strong branches again, control the strong branches and leave the weak branches, adjust the tree potential in a balanced way, master the principle of strong lateral branches, prune the strong branches heavily (about 1∕2 can be cut off), prune the weak branches lightly (about 1∕3 can be cut off), leave more branchlets, highlight the main branches, and promote tree growth.

For more than three clustered branches growing together, in principle, the branches should be thinned. Cluster branches with three branches can be reduced by 1-2 branches, and cluster branches with more than four branches can be reduced by 2-3 branches.

Trimming incision should be smooth to prevent wall crack. The suitable stubble height is 1 cm -2 cm. Too high or too low will affect wound healing and tree growth. The wound should be coated with tung oil to protect the wound from healing as soon as possible. Pruning season is suitable for early spring or late autumn and early winter. In early spring, it should be done before the sap flows out. If the trees are pruned when they sprout, the water in the trees will evaporate quickly, lose water and consume more nutrients, which is not conducive to the growth of trees. As a fast-growing tree species, willow can also be pruned in summer. But be careful not to prune in rainy days, so as not to soak the wound and infect the disease.
