The famous doctor I met in Ningbo: Xu Wenda, who said, "It's late when the sun sets, but it's still full of sunshine."
"I hope everyone is healthy, why not be poor alone"-this couplet is almost universally known in the field of Chinese medicine. The author of the couplet is Fan Wenhu, the most famous modern doctor in the history of Ningbo. According to Yinxian County Records, "When a patient comes to the door, he can see it, that is, he knows where his disease is, and he can't recover after taking medicine." Traditional Chinese medicine has always been known as "the god who knows what he is looking at", and Mr. Fan has such a skill as "an imperial doctor".

Not long ago, Fan Wenhu, one of the fourth batch of intangible cultural heritage inheritance projects in Haishu District, Ningbo, settled in the "Traditional Chinese Medicine Hall" in Chuanbu Lane, Nantang Old Street, Ningbo, and clearly pointed out that Xu Wenda was one of the representative inheritors of Fan Wenhu's traditional Chinese medicine.

I met Xu Lao in the midsummer of 1982. He was then the director of internal medicine of Ningbo Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and his political outlook was the Agricultural Workers' Party (he joined the Agricultural Workers' Party through the introduction of Zhong Yitang and Zhang Peikun in 1981). He was very active and enthusiastic in the party affairs of the Agricultural Workers' Party and served as the chairman of the Working Committee on Ageing.

I joined the Agricultural Workers' Party in 1983, and one of the introducers was Mr. Xu Wenda (the other was Mr. Zhang Peikun, then vice president of Chinese Medicine Hospital). However, it was actually Mr. Xu Wenda who talked to me many times in the medical institute, sent me information and introduced the situation of the Agricultural Workers' Party, so in this sense, he was the actual guide for me to go to the position of chairman of the Agricultural Workers' Party in Ningbo, member of the Central Committee of the Agricultural Workers' Party and vice chairman of the Ningbo Municipal CPPCC.

At that time, I was engaged in the research of compound "Anti-cancer Single-edged Sword" with Agrimonia pilosa as the main anti-cancer medicine in the medical institute. When he heard the news, he took the initiative to ask me for a prescription and tried it in his own clinic. He modified this prescription on the basis of syndrome differentiation and treatment, and it was used to treat lung cancer, and achieved good results. For a time, as soon as you saw me, you said, "Your prescription of Agrimonia pilosa is good and effective!"

Later, he reorganized and edited the "anti-cancer single-edged sword" and formed his basic prescription for clinical treatment of cancer-Anti-cancer Liuwei Decoction. And in Xu Wenda Clinical Experience Collection (Ningbo Publishing House, 215), there are many cases in which Liuwei Decoction, which is mainly composed of Agrimonia pilosa, has been proved to be effective.

Xu Lao's style of study, regardless of age, is virtuous, learning from others' experience with an open mind, being flexible and innovative, and serving his own needs, can indeed be called a "model". As his disciple, Dr. Zhang Haibin, said in the preface of the book Xu Wenda's Clinical Experience Collection: "Xu Lao is good at learning other people's clinical experience and using it for himself."

At the age of 1, Mr. Zhong Yitang personally wrote a preface to this collection of clinical experiences of Xu Lao, and gave a very practical evaluation and introduction to Mr. Xu Wenda:

After his retirement in 1993, Xu Lao went out to the clinics of Chinese Medicine Hospital, Zhong Yishoutang, Gulou Hospital and other units, and often actively participated in the activities of the Chinese Medicine Association and the Agricultural Workers' Party, which was very busy. I have also recommended patients with gastrointestinal problems to him for treatment many times. He has always been enthusiastic, attentive, patient and meticulous. Its medicine is sent to the prescription, and the silk is buckled, so the curative effect is extraordinary.

Now, Xu Lao has reached the age of chapped back, but he is still active in the front line of clinic. His motto is "Be angry and forget food, be happy and forget worries, and never know when old age is coming". This mental outlook of "Don't say that the sunset is late, because the sky is full of sunshine" is really admirable.

This year marks his 9th birthday. Shortly after New Year's Day, I made an appointment with Ms. Zhang Hui, the chairman of Zhong Yishoutang, and made a special trip to visit him in Jiangdong on the day of his outpatient service. I wish him a happy life in the mountains and the sea.
