Jiangning District is located in the south-central part of Nanjing City, between 31°37′-32°07′ north latitude and 118°28′-119°06′ east longitude, with a total area of ??1,561 square kilometers and a water area of ??186 square kilometers. It borders Qixia District and Jurong City to the east, Lishui District to the southeast, Dangtu County and Ma'anshan City of Anhui Province to the south and southwest respectively, and Yuhuatai District and Qinhuai District to the north and northeast.

Jiangning County was founded in the second year of Taikang in the Western Jin Dynasty (281). Before the establishment of the county, the county area either belonged to one town or belonged to several counties. According to "Historical Records: Wu Taibo Family", before the Zhou Dynasty, Jiangning was a land of Jingman. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, Jiangning belonged to the State of Wu. In the early Warring States period, it was under the jurisdiction of the State of Yue. In the thirty-sixth year of King Xian of Zhou Dynasty (333 BC), it was under the jurisdiction of Jinling City of Chu State.
In the thirty-seventh year of the First Emperor of Qin (210 BC), Jinling City was abolished and Moling County was established. Danyang and Jiangcheng counties were also established, both belonging to Kuaiji County. In the early Han Dynasty, the Jiangning area was the Jiangdu Kingdom, which was divided into three feudal states: Moling, Hushu, and Danyang.
At the end of the Han Dynasty, Sun Quan changed Moling County to Jianye County. In the first year of Jin Taikang (280), Jianye County was renamed Moling County, and Linjiang County was established southwest of Moling. In the ninth year of Kaihuang's reign in the Sui Dynasty (589), Jiankang, Moling and Tongxia counties were merged into Jiangning County and belonged to Jiangzhou. In the third year of Daye of the Sui Dynasty (607), Jiangzhou was abolished and Danyang County was restored. Jiangning County belonged to Danyang County. In the eighth year of Kaibao's reign in the Song Dynasty (975), Jiangning Prefecture was renamed Shengzhou Prefecture, with jurisdiction over Jiangning and Shangyuan counties. In the second year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1645), Yingtian Mansion was changed to Jiangning Mansion.
In the third year of Xianfeng (1853), the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom established its capital in Jiangning Prefecture and changed its name to "Tianjing". In the third year of Tongzhi (1864), it was renamed Jiangning Prefecture and administered Jiangning, Shangyuan and other counties.
On January 1, the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the Provisional Government of the Republic of China established Jiangning Prefecture as its capital and changed it to Nanjing Prefecture. The following year, Nanjing Prefecture was abolished and Jiangning County was established. On February 10, 1933, the 22nd year of the Republic of China, Jiangning Autonomous Experimental County was established, directly under the Jiangsu Provincial Government.
In the 23rd year of the Republic of China (1934), the county seat was moved from Nanjing to Dongshan Town and was separated from Nanjing City. In the 27th year of the Republic of China (1938), the anti-Japanese democratic regimes of Jiangning, Hengshan, and Shangyuan counties were established in the Jiangning area. During this period, the Wang puppet established a pseudo "county government" in Dongshan Town.
Jiangning County was liberated on April 24, 1949. On April 28, the People's Government of Jiangning County was established, under the jurisdiction of Zhenjiang District, Southern Jiangsu Administrative Region. In December 1949, it was transferred to Nanjing City. In January 1950, it was still transferred back to Zhenjiang District.
