Chanel little black dress

Chanel was the first designer to design a black dress (1926), which is still one of the greatest designs in fashion history.

Let's have an interview with ELLE.

Past lives in Chanel's little black dress

Little black dress (usually abbreviated as LBD) enjoys the reputation of being versatile, easy to wear and never missing, and naturally becomes a must-have item in women's wardrobe. In order to celebrate the 80th birthday of Chanel's little black dress, one of the most influential designs in fashion history, ELLE invited karl lagerfeld to talk about her past life in the little black dress.

This year, the whole world is celebrating the 80th birthday of Chanel Little Black Dress, which is one of the most influential fashion innovations.

1926, Ms. Chanel released her little black dress for the first time. The timing is perfect, because the stormy changes brought to European society by World War I created opportunities for the little black dress. After it came out, people called it Ford skirt with the name of the best-selling American car. The popularity of the little black dress can be seen.

Although there used to be black skirts, the style and outline created by Chanel are completely unprecedented. Without the big hat, narrow skirt and extreme decoration before the war, the little black skirt is knee-high and handsome and slender, and the less accessories are needed, the better.

Unsurprisingly, the ladies soon found that anyone can wear a little black dress, especially for those who want to have a new attractive appearance, a little black dress can make them more elegant. Similarly, the little black dress also gives a quite feasible choice for women in the new era who can't change two or three sets of clothes a day.

Although the little black dress has been criticized, such as designer paul poiret, who thinks it is "malnourished", more and more people still put it in their closets. At many turning points in fashion history, the little black dress has been reinterpreted constantly, becoming the favorite of intellectuals, rockers and punks.

Nowadays, women's desire and dependence on the little black dress is unprecedented. As Didier Ludo wrote in his Little Black Dress, "A woman without a little black dress has no future."

Karl lagerfeld, the current designer of Chanel, even talked to ELLE about the little black dress in his eyes:

Q: What's your favorite little black dress?

A: Chanel's famous Ford skirt, because it set a precedent.

Q: Which LBD (little black dress) you designed is your favorite?

A: I never use English abbreviations to answer questions. Sounds like a medical term.

Q: Who do you think performed the little black dress best in history?

A: Mrs Reginald Feros (French American socialite), Audrey Hepburn and Ms Chanel herself.

Q: Among other designers who designed the little black dress, which ones do you admire most?

A: There is not a French designer who has not tried to design a little black dress. Olivier Theyskens of Rosa, Nicolas Ghesquiere of Balenciaga, alber elbaz of Lanvin and Stefano Pilati of YSL all designed very chic little black dresses. If hedi slimane also makes women's dresses, I believe he will also design a great little black dress. Of course, some of my designs are not too bad.

Q: So is there anything in men's wear that can go with the little black dress?

A: Small black jacket. Or use your terrible expression, LBJ.

Q: How many black jackets and ties do you have?

Answer: Go to my place and copy a catalogue. Of course, the peace I have is often different from what I wear. I only like the ones I bought recently. I am a real fashion victim, and I can always make the store do well. As for black ties, oh, yes, all my ties are black. Usually I don't like pink ties, but occasionally I force myself to wear them.

Q: Why is black the most pleasing?

A: Because black is achromatic, you can dress well without much effort. At the same time, as fashion workers like us, we must wear black, otherwise we may get lost in our own world.

Q: What's your favorite little black dress in the movie?

Many good movies are in black and white. You can always see a little black dress, although it is not very beautiful or even black.

Q: What about artworks?

A: Balthus painted a portrait of Marie-Laurie de Noel.
