Genesis Orchestra announced that 1998 would stop performing indefinitely.
Just beginning to become an army.
The original crew of Genesis are Peter Gabriel (singer), Anthony Phillips (guitar), Tony Banks (keyboard), Mike Rutherford (bass) and Chris Stewart (percussion). 1969, they recorded their first album from Genesis to Revelation. Producer jonathan king wrote this song himself. In the process of recording, Chris Stewart left the band and was replaced by John Sylvie. Jonathan King liked the Bee Gees-style pop songs they recorded, so he put them together and announced that it was a "concept album". He also added some stringed instruments to these recordings. This album is generally considered to be of low standard, so Genesis members think it was designed by him. They announced the dissolution of Genesis Orchestra and terminated their contract with Kim. Today, Kim is regarded as very brazen by members and fans because he claims that the name Genesis was invented by him and demands the right to participate in the re-recording of this album in the future.
After the release of the first album, Genesis regrouped around their new drummer, John Mayhew, and sang hard everywhere, and finally won a new contract with Charisma Records. Through live performances, Genesis's exaggerated modeling and gloomy style gradually became their most prominent features. Phillips left the group on 1970 for health reasons (partly due to stage tension) in the album "trespassing".
Invasion defined the band's style in the 1970s, characterized by long, sometimes opera songs, occasionally mixed with short, often humorous songs. Its style is similar to progressive rock, such as King of Crimson, Yes, Gong Orchestra and Gentle Giant. Its music includes carefully choreographed tunes and special effects.
The departure of Phillips dealt a great blow to Banks and Luther, because Phillips was both one of the founders and the main driving force of the group's professionalization. At that time, they also doubted whether the group could go on.
After all, the remaining three people are determined to move forward and improve the quality of league members in an all-round way. 1On August 4th, 970, phil collins was found to take the place of drummer. The four played together, and they also cooperated with guitarist Mick Barnard.
But the members of the orchestra realized that Barnard could not match their skills, and they continued to look for a successor to Phillips. At the end of 1970, Steve Hackett submitted an inspiration for job hunting in the music magazine Melody Maker, and Gabriel answered the inspiration. He hired Hackett as soon as he heard him play.
The rule of Peter Gabriel
The first work of the classic lineup is Nursery Cryme in 197 1, including Harold Wooden Bucket, Sal mathis Fountain, For Absent Friends, phil collins's First Singing in the Group and Music Box.
Foxtrot (1972) includes a 23-minute masterpiece "Dinner is Ready" and a work inspired by arthur clarke "Watcher in the Sky". This album allows Genesis Orchestra to prove its creative and live performance skills. Gabrielle's gorgeous and dramatic stage modeling (changing clothes repeatedly during the performance) and reciting surreal stories as a preface before the song singing made the live performance of Genesis Orchestra a big reason for people to watch at that time.
Then 1973' s "Selling England by Pound" was highly praised by all parties, and many fans recognized this album as the immortal work of Genesis Orchestra. The songs in the album, such as Firth of Fifth, I know what I like (in your closet) and Cinema Show, have become timeless classics.
Guitarist Steve Hackett used some rare techniques (Eddie Van halen was recognized as the publisher) and sound sweeping (/kloc-0 was promoted by Yngwie Malmsteen in the 1980s) when making these albums. His superb guitar skills can be heard in The Return of the Giant Pig Grass, Dinner is Ready and Dancing with the Moonlight Knight.
Later, the music atlas of Genesis was extended to the concept album, and Lamb Lying on Broadway was released in June1974165438+10, which tells the surreal journey of the master riel (a Puerto Rican punk boy) in new york. During the album production, Banks and Gabriel had many differences. Genesis performed the whole album in America, but the complexity and obscurity of the album made the sales performance not dazzling. Years later, phil collins recalled, "I still don't understand this album."
After the tour of "The Attractive Lies of Broadway", Gabriel felt that he was gradually restricted by the group, and his marriage made him unable to devote himself to the performance without scruple. 1975 left Genesis Orchestra. In this album, Gabriel did not participate in the music part at all. He is only responsible for the creation of stories and lyrics. 1977 The lyrics of "Salisbury Mountain" in Gabriel's first solo album (Peter Gabriel (I)) are to express his feelings of leaving Genesis Orchestra.
Phil collins period
After Gabriel left, the band began to look for a new singer. Rutherford said in an interview: "We have many strange candidates because of Peter and his clothes." So far, phil collins has been given the task of teaching candidates to sing Genesis songs because of his background singing. People gradually realize that this "teacher" is much better than other candidates, but they don't want to admit that the drummer of the orchestra should be the heir of Peter Gabriel. Joan Anderson of Yes is one of the few people who can compare with Collins.
Finally, everyone decided to let Collins be their lead singer at least during the recording. Many people think that Gabriel will fail without the band. But Collins proved himself to be the best player. Many band lovers and music critics expressed surprise. In fact, few bands can continue to achieve success after losing a popular singer like Gabriel. What's more unique is that the replacement is actually the drummer of the band.
"A Tail trick" was well received, which also proved that this band is not only the accompaniment of the singer who performed in front. The production of this record is also much better than the previous record, which is mainly attributed to the new producer David Hentschel, who was an engineer of The Crime of Innocence. Another reason for the success of this record is that phil collins (to quote a critic) sounds even better than Gabriel. This record contains some typical songs at that time, such as Ripple, Crazy Crazy Moon, Dance on Volcano and Entanglement.
The success of the tail trick does not solve the problems of the orchestra. Collins believes that he can finish the task on the stage, but they still need a drummer to replace him. At that time, the only drummer he trusted was Bill Bruford who switched from Yes to King Crimson. On the tour of 1976, Bruford joined the orchestra, and later Chester Thompson, who was born in jazz, became a drummer while performing on the stage, which made Collins step into the light. Before joining Genesis, Thompson worked in weather forecasting and Frank Zappa. Collins sings Gabriel's songs live, unlike Gabriel. First of all, his performance is not like Gabriel, and his singing is more relaxed and subtle than Gabriel's. Peter Gabriel told Collins that Collins sang Gabriel better than Peter at the reunion performance of Millinkinas in 1982, but not exactly like Peter.
Wind & published at the beginning of 1977; Wuthering proved the advantages of the new lineup of the band. This record includes two classic songs: Earl of Adventure and Afterglow.
Hatch's departure
Guitarist Steve Hatch gradually fell out with the band. Gabriel entered through the back door and took the opportunity to record a solo record. The freedom he felt when recording "Journey to the Orchestra" made him feel the limitations brought by the orchestra. According to Collins, at that time, the hatched people demanded the wind &; He wrote a quarter of Wuthering Heights. Collins thinks, "For the workers in a band, this is a stupid way." Genesis tries to satisfy his request, saying that there are more songs in "restless sleep" ... "On a Quiet Earth" was written by the hatched people, but it can't satisfy the hatched people. Found pigeons (including wind &; After Wuthering Heights was published, Hatch left the orchestra. 1977 "seconds out" concert live record is the last record jointly released by Hutched and Genesis.
Mike Rutherford took over Heicott's recording task, and Daryl Stormy played guitar and bass in the live performance. The band continued to perform as a trio. Their record 1978 is therefore called "... three left ...". At the same time, this album shows a significant change in the music of Genesis: they bid farewell to the masterpieces of the past 65,438+00 minutes and turned to short songs that are more suitable for radio play. They recorded their first American radio pop song "Follow You Follow Me", which made this album the first gold record of Genesis in America.
More rock and roll, more popular
1979 phil collins moved to Canada to save his first marriage, and Genesis almost lost him. But Collins divorced two months later, and he returned to England and immediately devoted himself to the work of Duke University. Collins later said that the failure of marriage accelerated his process of becoming a singer. Duke is the first album with as many songs as Banks and Rutherford. Duke kept Genesis songs away from their11970s songs, and long and complicated songs were replaced by shorter and more "acceptable" songs. Later Genesis album and phil collins's solo project all used electronic drums.
Duke is more commercial than the albums before Genesis. It was well received by the mainstream media and became the first Zhang Guanjun album of Genesis in Britain. Misunderstanding and reopening it has become a compulsory song for the orchestra.
198 1 genesis records Abacab. Many brass and wind instruments are used in this album. "No Reply at All" was produced in cooperation with the Earth, Wind and Fire Choir. This album also uses a more powerful Collins drum. Noise-proof doors are also used, and some songs don't need gongs. When Collins assisted Peter Gabriel in recording Gabriel's solo album Intruder in 1980, Hugh Padgham, a Genesis engineer and co-producer, studied some new sounds with Gabriel and added them to Abaka.
All these new developments, including the production of Pazhihan, are also reflected in Collins' first solo album "Yan Value" earlier this year. Especially drums with doors, have since become the sound symbols of Genesis and phil collins.
Coincidence and solo's Success
1982, the orchestra released a two-person live performance album "Three Sides Live". The American version of this album has three live songs and a studio recording. The latter includes "Paperlate", which has been published in Britain before, so the British version contains more live recordings of the past. This year, the orchestra also held a coincidence concert with Gabriel and Hector. The concert was hastily prepared to make up for a concert that Gabriel did not attend at the World Music Art and Dance Festival at the beginning of the year.
1983, the orchestra released the album Genesis named after the orchestra, which is the third album of the number one orchestra in Britain.
The album contains songs suitable for radio broadcasting, such as "Mom" (ending with a dramatic live drum performance) and "That's All", but there are also some Long song that orchestras like, such as "Home by the Sea", which is particularly popular in Asia because of its five-tone scale. "Just a job to do" became the theme song of ABC 1985 detective film "Insider".
Invisible Touch (1986) is the highest-selling album in Genesis, and phil collins reached the peak as a solo musician at that time. Five songs in the album have entered the top five in the United States. Critics and former fans of Genesis criticized the album as "popular", and many people wondered whether the success of Collins' solo would lead to the division of the orchestra.
At the beginning of that year, a British TV satirical program "Spitting an Image" used a puppet of Collins, and Collins had a far-reaching influence on it. The band contacted the producer to make a TV video called Land of Conquest. This video is a satire on the cold war. The leaders of both sides of the cold war especially like to press the button of nuclear war. Ronald Reagan's puppet is dressed in Superman costume. This video was nominated as MTV's best video candidate of the year, but was defeated by Peter Gabriel's sledgehammer. Interestingly, Rutherford's puppet was later reused as Jesus among imitators.
Genesis 1987 is the first orchestra to hold a four-day concert in Humble Stadium. The orchestra used the most advanced technology at that time. Many techniques first used in Genesis are necessary equipment for today's rock concert.
The orchestra was interrupted for a long time because all the musicians were busy with their solo career. At 199 1, they published We Can't Dance. This is the last album produced by phil collins and the orchestra in the factory. This album includes some very successful songs, such as Jesus, who knows me, I can't dance and have no son, and longer songs, such as driving the last spike and dimming the lights. There is also a song "Since I Lost You" to commemorate the untimely death of eric clapton's son.
Collins himself became a superstar here, and his solo career was very successful. He recorded his own voice, made TV programs and attended concerts in robert plant and eric clapton as a drummer. Collins' own success certainly promoted the success and style of Genesis Orchestra. Many people regard his leaving the orchestra on 1996 as the end of the orchestra.
Phill colins said he wanted to regroup the original Genesis band under the leadership of Peter Gabriel. Steve Hackett and Gabriel both said that everyone was discussing this issue. However, on June 5438+February 1 day, 2005, members of the orchestra issued a statement saying that they had no plans to perform together in the next 12 months.
Ray Wilson joined.
Rutherford and Banks decided to continue, and they could supplement the missing band members. The drummer is Israeli drummer Nir Zidkyahu and Nick D'Virgilio of Spock Beard Band. Their styles are quite obvious. De Vigilio's rhythm is mild and simple, while Zhide Kiahu plays very hard. Live guitarist Stolme also played with Collins. Anthony Drennann, who worked with Paul Brady and the Kerr family, was hired as a guitarist. Finally, Banks and Rutherford hired Ray Wilson, a former singer of stilts, to replace Collins. Wilson is not the only candidate. Legend has it that Rutherford's solo band Mike and mechanics band singers Paul Calaque and paul young are also under consideration. Other legends say that fish, the former singer of Marillion, a progressive rock band, or Sting, a police band, may be chosen, and many fans of pure rock music want Peter Gabriel to return.
Call Taiwan sells well in Europe, but it is not successful at all in America. The reason is that hip-hop culture, alternative rock and juvenile pop music are more popular in the United States than classic rock. Therefore, Genesis canceled the plan to tour the United States.
Dissolution and subsequent development
Even so, Genesis was dissolved, but its members (including Phillips and Hackett, but not Gabriel) kept in touch, and the possibility of reorganization was not ruled out.
In 2007, during the Live Earth Climate Crisis Anti-warming Concert organized by Al Gore, the members of Genesis Orchestra, who kept in touch with each other, regrouped and participated in this activity again, and sang songs such as Invisible Touch.
