What does "Goth" mean?
Gothic culture, as a modern cultural movement, began with the punk rock music wave in the late 1970s. When the latter gradually receded, Gothic culture survived as a marginal subculture. Gothic culture is a unique cultural category of music, art and literature with retro style in the Middle Ages. Musically, it inherited the musical style of punk rock music in Europe and America in the 1970s, artistically, it showed a strong retro tendency of Gothic architectural style in Western Europe12-16th century, and in literature, it evolved into that kind of eerie mysterious dark literature. Gothic culture tends to be non-violent, pacifist, passive and tolerant. However, in many media, it is misunderstood as extreme violence, racial hatred and the marginal culture of white supremacy. Gothic culture always shows a lonely, alienated and gloomy spirit, and it always discusses those thought-provoking social problems, such as racial discrimination, war and hatred. The spiritual obsession with death drives Gothic culture to constantly try to find another way to think about life, pain and death.

Goths are a Germanic people in Europe, generally distributed in the Danube River basin. Some people say that they are actually aborigines in modern Sweden. The Goths were extinct before the Renaissance in Europe, and their history spanned from the 4th century to the 7th century.

Historically, Goths have been famous for their violent style in Europe. If it weren't for the invasion of Huns, they might even capture the whole Roman Empire. The tough Huns migrated from the East and attacked many ethnic groups in Eastern Europe, and the Goths, as one of many ethnic groups, were forced to move westward at this time. In order to avoid the Huns' attack, the Goths' residential areas moved westward and gradually moved away from their hometown. Before the Huns arrived, the Goths had a great force to be proud of, and no one could resist their offensive from land or water.

In the 4th century AD, the Gothic nation split from within. Some of them became later visigoths, that is, visigoths, who lived in Romania today. Another tribe became ostrogoths, that is, ostrogoths. They migrated eastward until the lower reaches of the Danube and established towns near the Black Sea. As soon as the Huns appeared, they launched a fierce attack on the two branches of the Goths. Unable to resist, the visigoths were forced to move westward to avoid the fate of genocide. The Otto Goths were not so lucky. They finally succumbed to the powerful force of the invaders, were annexed by other nationalities, and became a part of the Xiongnu Kingdom.

The Visigoths continued their westward journey and soon found a place suitable for survival and development in today's Spain. At this time, the Roman empire had gradually begun to decline, and the Romans tried to bring the Visigoths into the jurisdiction of the empire. But the Visigoths were finally able to declare their independence and strength by force, and then establish their own sovereign kingdom through constant attacks. They swept the whole of Italy and Greece with unstoppable force, and laid siege to Rome, the former imperial capital, in 409 AD. After that, the Visigoths continued to advance westward, and finally established a kingdom with Spain and Gaul as the main bodies. In the 7th century, the fate of Visigoth kingdom began to tilt to the brink of turmoil and extinction, and at the same time it had to bear the invasion from Franks. On the first page of the 8th century, the Moors finally conquered Spain and the whole Visigoth kingdom.

At the same time, the fate of the Otto Goths is also a history of ups and downs. They have lived under the rule of Huns for decades, but they can still get rid of the shackles, gain independence and freedom through unremitting efforts, and further establish their own kingdom. The territory of the new kingdom is located in the west of the native land of the Otto Goths, which is where Hungary, Croatia and Austria are located today. The new kingdom and the Byzantine kingdom, a descendant of the Eastern Roman Empire, have always had entangled diplomatic relations. They went to war several times and returned to peace several times. In 488 AD, the Otto Goths began to invade Italy, just as their brothers did half a century ago. However, shortly after the death of Theodoric, the leader of the Otto Goths, in 535 AD, the Byzantine general Belisarius led an army to storm and completely defeated the Otto Goth kingdom.

It was not until the eighth century that the Gothic nation was completely extinct.

1774, Horace Walpole published The Castle of Holtein. The concept of Goth has occupied British culture. Gothic novels have been criticized by many critics because of their sensational and emotional nature and their interpretation of supernatural phenomena. This genre has got super imagination from grave poets like Gray and Thompson, and it is a landscape painting that combines a lot of black forests and monotonous life. There are sinful houses, ruins of monasteries and a miserable and desperate life of extreme depression. For the "victims" who indulge in supernatural phenomena in these books, imaginary ghosts and visions of bleeding nuns often appear in front of their eyes. Gothic culture, as a movement of literary thoughts, deeply disappointed the idealized romantic poets, because it was subverted by ann radcliffe's sentimental character without surpassing reality. Although Gothic novels have influenced many new schools and inspired them.

/kloc-Around 0/820, with the publication of Melmos the Wanderer by Charles Matallin, Goth stopped this vague state and began to form his own creative and appreciation group.

Today, it seems that the influence of traditional Gothic novels is the depiction of attractive opponents. The evil personality characteristics of these opponents inspired some people's awe. Or farce romance, or add some gothic themes to make girls leave true love. Up to now, Gothic novels still contain some elusive and uncertain variants. They have a greater influence on people today. In addition, literary critics have gradually accepted Gothic culture.

The first batch of critics who studied Gothic culture approached it devoutly with the attitude and interest of studying history. They tried to save Gothic culture and revive this lifeless and vague school. These critics put the existing Gothic novels into the long river of history to test, criticize and explore, and systematize and legalize Gothic articles. This is a reflection of rationality, system and politics in Britain in the18th century (although it is a distorted and hidden reflection).

Gothic novels began to be born from the depression of sentimental culture, and became more and more extreme and abnormal in the development of tomb-robbing poets, which laid the foundation for the influence of romantic classical schools. Goth's shocking exaggerated style and extreme description and application of supernatural phenomena have profoundly influenced the increasingly romantic style and content. Although in the modern atmosphere from Joyce Carol to Ann Rice, the influence of Gothic culture is still stirring, and his cultural theme can also be seen in other cultural forms. However, the traditional pure Gothic culture and novels have completely disappeared from the canoe of western culture. There are many books left.

Personally, I don't think Gothic culture has died out. As long as there are human beings, it will not die out. Those depressed and low-key emotions, the more rapid development of science and technology, the stronger the fear in human hearts. Small and eager for self-recognition. . . . These feelings are fertile ground for the growth of Gothic culture and novels. The ultimate goal of any literature is to explore people's inner world.

In fact, I think there were many novels and genres similar to Gothic culture in China before liberation. But in the society ruled by Confucianism, they will never have the environment and fertile soil like Gothic culture, no matter how sad. This may be the "cultural difference between East and West", but I am still addicted to it.
