Karakava made a statement in Hawaiian verse at that time, and the excerpt is as follows:
My people! My ancient compatriots! Get up! That's the sound!
Wow! Tribe! Wow! My ancients! Establish and maintain the people of Kamehameha Kingdom!
Get up! That's the sound!
My people, let me lead you and don't do anything that violates the laws of the kingdom and undermines the peace of the kingdom.
Don't go or vote.
Don't let foreigners lead you. They did not participate in the suffering of our founding. Don't be misled by their wrong lessons.
Karakava is much more conservative than his opponent Lunalillo. At the same time, foreigners have considerable control over the Hawaiian government. Karakava promised to get more Hawaiians back to work in the Royal Government. He also promised to amend the constitution of the kingdom.

The next day, Congress confirmed universal suffrage and unanimously elected Lunari Lowe as king. Karakava conceded defeat. Lunalillo died on1February 3, 874, one year after he ascended the throne.
On February 4 of the same year, Karakava announced his bid for the throne. His main rival was Queen Emma, the widow of the late Camille Khameha IV.
In this election, most Ali (equivalent to the royal family and nobles of the kingdom of Hawaii) supported Karakava, as did other members of parliament. Karakava defeated Queen Emma.
The National Assembly of the Kingdom of Hawaii held a meeting on February 1874 to elect the next monarch. The result of the vote was 39 votes for Karakava and 6 votes for Queen Emma. When the news that Karakava won the election came out, members of the party who supported Queen Emma immediately attacked the members of Congress who urged the court to declare Karakava won. The rebels forced their way into the court of the kingdom and brutally beat several members of parliament. One of them died after being thrown out of the window. The newly elected King Karakava asked the American army and British warships to help pacify the chaotic political parties and restore order before that night. After he ascended the throne, Karakava appointed his younger brother william pitt Rileohouku as the heir to the throne, ending the period when the Hawaiian king was elected.
Karakava took office by visiting various islands in Hawaii, which increased his popularity.
