Guyuan City belongs to the south of the sub-central city of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

Guyuan City is located on the Qingshui River at the northern foot of Liupanshan Mountain in the Loess Plateau. It is located in the center of the triangle formed by An, Lan and Yin, one of the five prefecture-level cities in Ningxia and the only city not along the Yellow River.

The Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia old revolutionary base area is planned as a central city, a regional central city in southern Ningxia, a political, economic and cultural center and a transportation hub.
