What folk customs are there in Shanxi?
1, Kang Waihua

According to textual research, the paintings around Kang should be born out of ancient murals in China, and they are all an architectural color painting art, just like the color paintings of palaces, temples and gardens. As the creators of Kangwai paintings are all folk craftsmen, they have never received official attention and are not recorded in history books, so it is difficult to verify their origins.

Kangwai painting is a special product of a special region. Because of the continental climate of the Loess Plateau and the low temperature in winter in Shanxi, every household in rural areas uses kang to keep warm from the cold.

The wall on the kang is easy to peel off and often stains clothes and bedding. So people first painted the wall with white mud mixed with glue (also called Ganzi soil), and drew a "fence" about two feet high on the wall around the kang, which not only protected the wall, but also saved people from the fatigue of dirty clothes and things.
