The Tibetan name of Tibetan opera is "Ajram", which means "Sister Fairy". It is said that Tibetan Opera was first performed by Seven Sisters, and most of the plays were fairy tales in Buddhist scriptures, hence the name. Tibetan opera with a history of more than 600 years is known as "the living fossil of Tibetan culture". Tibetan opera is a comprehensive performing art that expresses the story content in the form of song and dance. It has deep roots in religion and is influenced by Central Plains culture and Indian culture. Tibetan opera is mainly performed in religious festivals and folk festivals. The masks used in Tibetan opera are diverse in shape, lifelike, colorful in costumes and have distinctive characteristics of snowy plateau.
On May 20th, 2006, Tibetan Opera was approved by the State Council to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
