The Origin of Sugar Ball Club
Legend has it that one day more than 500 years ago, a huge log floated from the sea and carried a family to the sea. The local people thought it was providence, so they built a temple with this log and named it "Haiyun 'an". The first spring tide day every year, that is, the day when the big logs float, is the opening day of the temple. On this day, nearby villagers will come to make a wish, worship the gods and pray for a bumper harvest and peace. Artists from all over the world also came to perform, vendors set up stalls at the venue to sell, and the crowd was bustling and lively. Because hawthorn is abundant near Haiyun 'an, many vendors use hawthorn as sugar balls and sell them at temple fairs. Over time, Haiyun 'an Temple Fair was called "Haiyun 'an Sugar Ball Club" by local people at 1990. The Qingdao Municipal Government raised funds to completely restore Haiyuan 'an, officially named and hosted the first Haiyuan 'an Sugar Ball Club, which was held every year from 1 month 16 to 18. In addition to retaining traditional folk activities, the Sugar Ball Club has also added activities such as folk craft competitions, exhibitions of works by folk craftsmen, wedding lion dance competitions, large-scale song and dance parties, and performances by famous Peking Opera artists, aiming at developing a new tourism festival with sugar balls as the medium and integrating economic, trade, tourism and cultural activities.
