Yantai is adjacent to Weihai in the east, Weifang in the west, Qingdao in the southwest, Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea in the north, and faces Liaodong Peninsula and Dalian across the sea, which together form the maritime gateway of the capital Beijing.

Yantai is named after Yantai Mountain in China. In the thirty-first year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty, in order to prevent the Japanese pirates, the Langyan Wharf was set up in Yantaishan today. As early as Shang Dynasty, Yantai was the place to stay. Yantai belonged to Qi State in the Warring States Period, Qi State in the Qin Dynasty and Donglai County in the Han Dynasty. This is an out-and-out ancient city.
