Method of making butterfly specimens

One: electrical appliances

1. Insect needle: it is an essential tool for making butterfly specimens, generally made of stainless steel. Because butterflies are very different, the thickness of insect needles used is also different. Insect needles are generally 40mm long and vary in thickness, with the thinnest being No.0, the rest being 1 to No.4, and the thickest being No.5. ..

2. Wing plate: it is a tool for arranging butterfly specimens. There is a prepared version of the wings. When in use, just adjust the width. However, in the practice process, due to the limited tools and heavy workload, the simple way to make our own wing panels is to choose a long foam blow-molded panel and dig a ditch in the middle. Another is to blow the template directly with foam, and vice versa.

3. Labeling: In order to ensure that the collected butterflies have academic value, the butterfly specimens made must be labeled. The label needs to record the time and place of collection, the name of the collector and the scientific name.

4. Other tools: tweezers, paper strips, etc.

Second: the production method

1. Self-made wing plate or self-made slotted wing plate: adjust the spacing according to the butterfly size. First, prepare some pins. Take out the specimen, pierce the butterfly body with a suitable insect needle, insert the groove, fix the insect body, and then arrange the wings. The trailing edges of the two front wings are in a straight line, and the rear wing is deployed in a flying shape. Note that the front wing presses the rear wing, then press it with plastic film and fix it with a pin. Reshaping means that the butterfly's head is straight and its tentacles are shaped like a figure of eight. After spreading the wings and setting the specimen, put it in a ventilated place to dry, and then carefully move it into an insect box for preservation.

2. Non-ditched foam planking: The steps are roughly the same as above, that is, the butterfly should be stuck on the non-ditched planking, that is, the ventral side is up and the rear wing is pressed against the front wing.

Three: attention in the process

1. Because there are many scales on butterflies, and some butterflies are small, and their wings are easy to rot, we must be careful in manual operation, and gently spread our wings with tweezers to prevent scales from falling off and maintain their characteristics and integrity, so as to facilitate the subsequent seed identification work.

2. Be sure to take off the display board after drying, otherwise the posture will not be fixed.

Don't stick the needle in your wing.
