In Suifenhe River, the first batch of fish goes upstream in mid-April every year, shortly after the river thaws. This batch of fish is large in quantity, but small in size and bright red in color, so it is called "Golden Beach Head". The second batch went up the river in early May, with a slightly larger individual, but a small population and light body color, and was called "Yintantou". The third batch went up the river in the middle and late May. Larvae fatten in the river bend and fall into the sea at the end of autumn. Some of them spend the winter in the river bend and fall into the sea after thawing in the following spring. Adult fish return to the sea immediately after spawning.
The beachhead fish grows slowly, usually small and medium-sized fish with a body length of 250 mm. The annual growth situation is as follows: the beachhead fish matures early, the male fish matures at 2 years old and the female fish matures at 3 years old. When laying eggs, beachhead fish often swim to the beach with a water depth of only half a meter in large groups, hence the name "beachhead fish". When laying eggs, the male fish chase the female fish, and the waves splash, often stretching for hundreds of meters. It lays sticky eggs, which are large, with a diameter of 2.5-2.8 mm, and the enlarged fertilized eggs are 3.6-4.0 mm, which are orange-red. Eggs hatch on the gravel at the bottom of the river. When the water temperature is 65438 06℃, it can hatch in about 6 days, and the first hatched larvae are 7-8 mm long. The average number of pregnant eggs is about 30 thousand.
The prey of beach fish living in the sea is benthic invertebrates. The feeding habits of the lower reaches of the river are very complex, including benthic oligochaeta, shrimps and crabs, snails, chironomid larvae and mayflies, rotifers, cladocera and copepods, as well as Chrysophyta, dinoflagellate and diatom. In terms of seasons, animals are the main prey in summer and plants are the main prey in winter.
